hope it's not peanut butter looking.
However, be careful flushing it out, doing a simple oil change with synthetic can be bad, if all that stuff breaks up, it could cause damage.

One thing you want to look out for is that the oil filter doesn't get plugged up and cause damage from oil starvation. I'd go to walmart and get some cheap super tech filters and chage it out about half way through the oil change.

I'm pretty sure the oil filter can be bypassed when it is clogged like most engines

If the engine is sludged up that bad it sounds like the prior owner never changed his oil or something . I've heard a quart of diesel or kerosene can be used to flush an engine .... or im sure there is something at the parts store thats made to do it like seafoam . I use seafoam every oil change threw the intake because of Direct Injection / dirty valve issue . I haven't used it in the oil so i cant comment .

Any pic's of the sludge?

It will go into bypass mode but that will allow anything in the oil to go right to the engine unfiltered. The filters are 2.87 plus tax at walmart and they are as good as the ac delco filters you get from the dealer.

If u want a good way,may soynd strange but run 4qt kerosene and 1 qt oil. Change filter prier. Start car but do not rev...i repeat..DO NOT REV. Leter sit at idle a few. Change oil but when u drain, pour kero untill **** stops coming out nasty like. Run 2 qt oil in with plug then drain again, but dont start it. Then change to oil u like normally. Drive 50 miles or so to circulate new oil and grab all that excess kero. Then...change again. This time you should be good. So thats 3 new filters and almost 3 sets of oil.
If your weary of doing this, check out the stuff shops use to flush and compare....same stuff almost lol..
I did this to all my cars before. If anyone has a diff way that works as good...kool.

Change your oil. Add a quart of transmission fluid to 4 quarts of engine oil. That's always worked for my cars in the past

USE Pennzoil ULTRA 5/30 and run for 2k Miles..then do that two more times. Stay with it for 5K after that. This new oil WILL REMOVE SLUDGE slowly. Don't sea foam it.

So clean is it that, in addition to helping prevent the buildup of sludge and other deposits in the engine, the oil also cleans up existing sludge when used in an engine that had been running on a different oil. All the while, Pennzoil Ultra provides better wear protection than any other leading synthetic motor oil, according to Shell.

totally agree on using penzoil, i haven't changed my oil for about 5 months and i checked it today and its golden brown. I am gunna change it out though at the end of this month, but it just goes to show ya how good that oil is . So for the "op" I would not use the seafoam and try penzoil platinum or ultra and slowly get the sludge out that way.

I disagree. I used the cheap ones for a while and after 3000 miles the filter material became distorted/ bend. i switched to the acdelco and have had no problems after 4000 miles.

If the sludge is that bad you are going to have little choice but to use kerosene or seafoam to clean it out.

The real question is WHY is there sludge? If the oil was changed with the proper synthetic oil then the only answer would be contamination, probably from coolant. Of course you have no idea what type of oil was used in the car before you purchased it so it is hard to know for sure if that was the contributing factor or not. Also, what oil are you using for oil changes?

Please post pics as requested before. Also do a google search on how to flush an engine. I you are that concerned about oil pump blockage then install an oil pressure guage.

thanks alot for all the responses sorry for takin so long to get back to on. i forgot to take pics before i but cover back on been busy past couple weeks so havent even had a chance to get back in ther yet hopin to this week and will post them when i do. the only thing i can think for a cause is the girl who had it before me didnt doi any oil changes, she told me they ran full syntetic so i did regular oil changes with mobile 1 full synt. i was goin to try to get as much sludge out of the valve covers and oil pan by hand before i seafoam it and clean it out again after seafoam and then do short interval oil changes.

Fwiw, I used to have an Isuzu Rodeo that had inherent problems with sludge building up on the rings.

Anyways long story short, the rule of them to get rid of crap in the engine with them was to use Shell Rotella diesel oil (It also meets standards for gasoline engine oils) as it had a bunch of detergents in it to break it down and it worked spectacular. It may be worth a shot.
