Steering rack gone bad??

awhile back i took my car to the dealer and they said my steering rack was bad and needed to be replaced but they wanted 800-900$ to do it.. soo i said ill pass lol

it still turns and drives fine... it just sounds like a bunch of marbles or something in the steering componets rattling together...

so in this picture which is the steering rack or what would cause this noise??

the rack isn't in that picture. thats your steering motor, steering column and intermediate steering shaft. the rack is under the car like a few inches away from the front sway bar.

I get a clunk/pop at low speeds and every time I back up my driveway. Dealer coudn't find a problem and when I lowered it they said it was from my springs

I feel your pain...I took my Cobalt to the dealer this afternoon to have this steering rattling issue resolved. Their solution? Replace the steering column assembly ($1188)! I passed (out in shock). The entire steering column was replaced 2 years ago to the month. Last summer, I took the car in for the electric motor recall. Just last month I had the intermediate steering shaft replaced!

steering rack would seriously take an hour or 2 at most to swap out
its relatively easy

Here's a few causes/corrections that GM says about the rattle noises on the Cobalts.

Document ID: 2542813

We've also replaced the intermediate steering shaft for similar problems. I don't think it's on the document though.

I get a similar sound, but on when I am braking because I have a little bit of wobble on these shitty rotors.
