Strange Rubbing Sound

I've got an LSJ that has a noticeable rubbing sound coming from what I think is the driver side wheel but passengers claim it's on their side. It gets louder from about 40+MPH and it's not motor noise (which I noticed from clutching in and listening).

There's no marks on the fender liner from it hitting that and I'm running 215/45/18s. It just started last week and it's annoying. Thoughts on what it could be? The steering wheel doesn't shake and it doesn't pull to either side.

Thanks for your input.

^ i second this. if it gets quieter while turning the wheel in one direction, let us know which direction it is.

Wheel bearing most likely, if they have never been replaced. Could also be a cupped tire or worn/rusty rotors.

Tires are less than 2k miles, they're fine. Rotors and pads are great.

Doesn't change with direction. I wish thinking bearing, how hard are they to replace?

easy.

pull off the wheel. remove brakes, take axle nut off, remove 3 bolts that retain the hub assy. and reverse. should take you about an hour or so depending on what you have for skill/exp.

Was the wheel bearing the issue? I am having the same problem right now (humming noise) and figure it is the front drivers side wheel bearing.

Easy way to check. Jack up the car . . . move the tire back and forth at the 2 and 8 o' clock position.
It will have play and might have a slight knocking noise.

What kind of tires do you have? Could it possibly be tire noise?

I'm gonna go with wheel bearings. My wifes car was like this. Changed tires and brakes and still sounded like a 4x4 with knobbies. Turns out wheel bearing was bad. Tore it apart and there were some deformed bearings.

One of the best ways it to grab the coilspring while jacked up. Hold it tightly and spin tire by hand the dented race inside the bearing will rumble in your hand. To be safe check both sides if you dont feel much and if no vibes on the other side replace the one with vibes. Good luck to you. Ps they can be noisy and not loose.

You're exactly right. On my wife's car, everyone kept telling me that if it doesn't move that it's fine... WRONG!
