Question Transmission repair

I have a 2007 cobalt s/c. Transmission is not working. The place it was towed to is quoting me $1994 just for a rebuild plus $997 for installation. I feel like this is high. Any advice? Hate to pay more than necessary.

Im at a gm dealer, if you came to us you would be looking at around 1.6-1.9k in just labor alone (depending on what would be required) for a rebuild but remove and install is included with that. Usually we make the cust aware that a teardown time must be
authorized, Usually is about half of rebuild cost. That way if we get into it and parts and labor exceed than what the cust is willing to pay we don't lose the time tearing it apart. More often than not, your best bet is to get a used one with low miles.

What would be the rough cost to just replace tranny all together?

it depends on how much a used trans in your area is, im not 100% on how much a good used mu3 runs. but labor wise it would run you about $900 here to remove and replace the trans with another one.
