valve lashing?

this happens to me quite a bit, but intermittently...

http://s107.photobucket.com/albums/m...15-07_2048.flv

now, ive tried to recreate this for the chevy dealer, and cant. it happens sometimes when its cold, hot, cold outside, a/c on, a/c off, etc.. i dont know how to make it stop and dont know how to make it start. but it sounds like crap. when i rev, it just does it faster. it doesnt go away or get louder. im thinking it has to be something with the valvetrain, since in the video, i was moving my phone around the engine, and it seems to be louder next to the valve cover, right between the head and firewall.

a buddy of mine told me to buy a feeler gauge, and make sure the correct gaps are between the rocker arms and valves... he said its called valve lashing.

any ideas?

Mines ticks at startup, but it's way quieter than that . Id take that to the dealer and stay until it does it again.

This is a 2007 2.2L? That doesn't sound right. Ecotecs have hydraulic lash adjusters, so there is no manual lash adjustments to make. It's possible one of the HLAs is not doing holding oil pressure. I haven't heard of that for these engines. Is the tap definitely pin-pointed to w/in the cylinder head? My 2007 2.2L rattles like a **** on cold startup and also has a whining supercharger noise until it comes up to temp. Dealer couldn't hear/find anything. It's all quiet once warm.

not positive of it being in the head.. my EG (educated guess ) thats good you told me theres no adjustments to make because i was just about to rip off my valve cover and check it out.. the whining supercharger noise is from the SAI... i have mine disconnected so its REALLY LOUD.. i dont know if this ticking is normal or not, its been doing it for a while now....

Yep, the ecotecs and atlas series GM engines use 'fulcrum' style rocker arms. The hydraulic lash adjusters are kind of in the middle, between the cam lobe end and valve stem end of the rocker arm if I remember correctly. I'm not positive on what would need to come out to remove/inspect/replace the HLAs. As far as my whining noise, it's not the SAI blower on mine. I can hear the little leaf blower cycle for a few seconds on certain startups. It's different than the engine whine I've got going on. Thanks though.
