Vehicle Registration Problem

So, this is the story with my cobalt. I was in high school and as a graduation gift/stay in college thing my grandparents bought me the car. That was the spring/summer of 07. Anyways no problems until now. They car was purchased used, the price was not of concern. Anyway, one night i was driving along with gas tank low, i see a gas station on the left so i flip my turn signals early a proceed to the middle turning lane, i was in the rightmost lane of two. Anyways i saw some lights in my side mirrors so i gave some extra time with the signal. i make my move and bam! cop lights me up. i pull in the gas station anyways cuz i still need gas. at this moment im pissed cuz i hit my turn signals and was driving 5 mph under i was like WTFF. he comes up ask for license and proof of insurance handed it over. he comes back and asks me who is the vehicle registered to. i answer well im the driver but my grandparents are technically the owners as it still in there name. He tells me well the previous owner was still registered to the car (in San Antonio) and currently has warrants for his arrest. fortunately i did not fit the description of the perpatrator or else i would have been arrested. the perp was a middle aged hispanic male. anywho he starts letting me know what was the problem. at the point my temper subsides..../story

question: what rights do i have here. the dealership where we picked the cobalt up at sold us a car that is still, apparently, registered in some way to another person. I was like, how the **** is this car registered to another person when we have the "pink slip" to the car in my grandparents name? the VIN associated with the car is now under my grandparents name. how can we be making payments on a car that according to the cops records is registered to someone else. matters worse who has a criminal history and has outstanding warrants for his arrest.

can i make them fix it?
can i force them to take it back? (i dont want this POS btw)

any comments welcome

note: no way is this bashing the cop. the officer was curteous and professional.

Sounds like the car wasn't registered properly. Take your paperwork to the place that does vehicle registrations and have them check to make sure everything was switched correctly.
