I think the Mobil 1, was a deal between GM/Chevy and Mobil Oil.
If your going to use another brand, as long as it's full synthetic, and 5W-30 you should be ok. I think the owners manual on the fluids page, shows a spec # and says Or Equivilent or something to that effect.

because they're stupid.

I'd almost bet no one on here has ever had any of their engine oil professionally tested anyway, and even in forums where this is done, its still almost always a stupid topic.

sorry, but i just see this thread as an invitation to bicker about nothingness

If running a flat tappet cam you want a high zinc rate, we use valvoline off road racing oil in our flat tappet racing engines..

We use all roller in our 358ci SBC sprint car. 8300rpm, alcohol, etc. Joe Bibbs driven is high in zinc it claims, yet saw no diffrence on our bearings etc.

I just dont understand where people say " stuffs the best ever" , or "this is the only thing ever going into my oil pan". the oil is oil. no diffrence at all really. just poor the right weight/viscosity and your fine.

5W-30 is ****... when I am ****-pounding my car, i want a thicker oil. The heat transfer better and it doesn't 'thin' out. Also, that nasty little tickety tick that 2.0L LSJ gets after coming off a high speed burn doesn't show up with 10W-40.

5W-30 is for emissions and fuel economy.

As far as weights and viscosities, we have to be extra careful when changing it up due to the turbo and cam phasers. If the oil is too thick or thin, it won't properly lubricate the turbo. If it doesn't flow properly, it can damage the cam phasers or at least cause them to be off calibration (this was addressed a while back by a GM Engineer).

As far as brand, many would be surprised by how similar each is to another. It's not uncommon for different brands to be made at the same facility, on the same line, with nothing but a container/label change. Dino is dino, though what sets them apart are the additives.

IMO find the oil in the manufacturer recommended weight/viscosity that has the highest ZDDP content and call it a day (usually oils geared towards high mileage cars)

I have not noticed a difference between that and the Platinum , or the Quaker State HP so far.

I think I will go back to Mobil as a experiment next time since the motor ought to be fully broken in by now w/ 14,6XX on her.

I know in the Camaro with Mobil oils I seem to use more than others ( still talking syns here ), but so far I can't tell that I have used any w/ 1K on this last change - that is with Pennz Ultra 10W30.

Eeeeh - as long as it meets the GM4718M spec, all is good.

I sample mine every few oil changes, and now have 60,000 miles worth of analysis.

That goes the same for a lot of brands of gasoline as well though. I was kinda surprised to learn that an oil refinery I contracted out at in Wyoming made unleaded/premium and either trucked it to stations all over UT/WY/CO/MT, or threw it into a multi-use pipeline as unbranded gas and only became "branded" once it got to the station and their proprietary additives were added.
