**FOOTNOTE: Manufacturers must PAY to have their oil tested and approved by GM to make it on this list. There are lots of oil companies that do not pay and subsequently are not listed. Using an oil not on this list can be used as an argument for GM during a warranty claim for engine related failure. Use oils not on this list at your own risk.

Not meaning t revive a dead thread but when I used royal purple and my engine went due to lack of lubrication on cam lobes, the oil did not meet gm4718m, now that I looked at the jug where I bought it. Guess I learned something. Only found out about this rating today actually, when I didn't wanna pay so much for mobile 1 and got penzzoil platinum instead

Def have to pay attention to your oil change interval and get a UOA to really tell what your change interval should be.

Royal Purple has different blends, and a racing blend for DD isn't a good idea. Also oil stress is different in a LNF than a LSJ than a L61

It's a LAP but that' only the head that's different from the L61 (LE5 head), I just run the street stuff.

Buy a case at a time for $77 and get two oil changes out of it then 2 extra bottles, run with the K&N filter.

I rev to 7k and am not easy on it.

Found today that at 50 degrees my tires hold first at 40 degrees they start spinning at 2k.

You might think about a UOA just to make sure you're not breaking it down to far. A UOA is a cheap way to make sure you engine is staying/can stay healthy

I change it at about 50% but I have thought about it and probably should get one, have my last oil change still sitting in old bottles. Ran it down further than I would have liked to about 15%.

Just sent out for a kit from blackstone labs. I'll post when it comes back how my engine is.

Edit-
They claim only $25 on their site.

Did that before your post because I already knew about them from earlier threads, you ninja's me there.

ive gone through the whole blackstone lab thing before, good way to find out what oil works best. Ive been on the rotella T6 bandwagon for years now because of it. Every car i own runs 5w40 T6.

i change my oil at about 50% on the oil life meter. i think i will take a sample to work and get them to send it to get tested, they just did it for my forklift. ill see how much it costs.

you realize that when it says 50% that means you have 50% left to go before you need an oil change right?

Yes I do, but I don't trust that thing, I got about 5-8000km which is 3-5000 miles, on my oil by then, and like 4 months, so I change it . I know I can do up to 8k miles with synthetic or more but it just seems wrong to me to go that long

Agreed, if I let mine goto 0 it be similar. No way am I leaving my oil in there that long. And on my gfs car, 2.2, she uses conventional oil and by 50% she is at 5k Kms or more as well, which is stupid and to much

lol the reason the DIC goes that long is because it takes into account driving characteristics not just mileage as well (at least ive observed variations of up to 1000 miles difference in oil changes). It will move faster the harder you are on your car. I went from 100% to 73% and only put 1500 miles on my car. That's like saying well i fill my car up with gas when i hit half way on the gas gauge cus i dont want to risk running out of gas. All the more reason for you guys to get those blackstone lab tests done, my rotella T6 i tested was in perfect condition after 8000 miles and still had life left in it.

I've heard a few well respected people tell me that the OLM system works great at predicting oil life. I seem to get 15,000ish kilometers before it reaches 10% remaining. I run mobil 1 or Pennzoil plat whatever is in stock where I go. I do drive most long distance and pretty conservative compared to people on these forums. So I wouldn't stretch it 15,000km for most peeps.

Just got my Blackstone Labs report back. I went 9,342 miles on Royal Purple and it still had life in it and did better than the average (which is at only 5,600 miles) in the tests for the used oil properties. They told me to keep using the oil just as long for the next oil change.

Now for what scares me a bit.
ANDREW: There's a lot of aluminum and iron in this sample, though we see no obvious reason for the
wear. No contamination was found, and other metals look good, so it's not as though there are any
problems in the works throughout the engine. The poor wear seems to be localized to either
pistons/cylinders or bearings/steel shafts. Aluminum would be from either the pistons or the bearings.
Holding the oil a month wouldn't cause this. Listen for noises and watch oil pressure. Averages are based
on 5,600 miles. Use a similar interval for your current run. The TBN was okay.

I'm going to see what the next sample finds before I get too worried about this.

I run royal purple hps oil in my 2010 ss/tc. Once you step away from the API certified oils (SH, SM, SN, etc), the oil manufacturers can run a much higher concentration of antiwear additives. API certified oil has actually decreased the quantity of additives over the years in order to prolong cat con life. I run mine for 5000km, change the filter, run another 5000km, then do a full oil change.
