White smoke =bad???

Hey guys,
I got white smoke coming out of my tailpipe, and my oil catch can filter is smoking really bad.
First one to tell me what is wrong and the solution gets a rep point. *shrug* sorry but thats the best I can do.

Seriously though, anyone?

White smoke out the back, is it smoke or steam? Burning coolant usually is more like steam, where oil is smoke. If you are seeing stuff in the catch-can as well, i'd vote for maybe a cracked ring or something. Is the idle smooth and normal?

white smoke means you're burning coolant. Whether it's coming in through your headgasket or on these cars it could be coming through the intake from your supercharger cooling system. Do a compression test. If compression's good on all cylinders then it's coming through the intake.

White smoke (actually steam) = coolant getting into cylinder.

Blueish white smoke = Oil in cylinder! It can range from smoking only when the engine is first started and then going away as it warms up to blowing so much damn smoke the people behind you have a hard time seeing where they are going.

Black smoke = excess fuel, running way to rich.

If it is white smoke from coolant, it will be like when you first start your car in extremely cold weather. It will come out real thick but dissipate so that you do not see a long trail of smoke rising up into the sky. It will seem to disappear like steam.

Blueish white smoke from oil does not dissipate quickly or go away quickly like steam.

Here is a good link;

http://www.trustmymechanic.com/troubleshoot_smoke.htm

And when they say blue smoke it is actually a very light blue white tint to the smoke.

Well it is a constant smoke that does not go away. My girl was folowing me on Saturday and she said a bigger cloud would come out when I shifted. If I sit at a light it is a canstant flow.

I am getting a Leak-down test done tomorrow. I really hope it's nothing too bad. I'll let you guys know what happens.

well how "bad" is it. because some smoke is normal, but if you pouring it out like a mosquito fogger, then i'd say head gasket, or a coolant leak somewhere.

not always, look at the dipstick, does it look like chocolate milk? if so then yeah that=bad news. i really dout that though becuase it still wouldnt get past the oil rings, and if it did then you would burn. BLUE smoke, blue smoke= oil, white= coolant, black= rich

Shifting gears under normal conditions puts out a good smoke screen. Idling at a light makes other folks roll up their windows.
It is not a "normal" amount at all.

The smoke coming out of the oil catch-can filter is the worst. You can actually see how the oil was blown out the top of it.

That sounds like oil sucking past a valve seal or something similar. I had a Tercel that used to do that, it was common on those cars. Check your oil level, and look around your exhaust tip, you might even have oil spots if its bad enough.

I would bet its something in the head, either a cracked valve seat or bad valve seal, something allowing CC pressure to blow out the oil and suck it down into the cyl's under high vacuum conditions like idle and shifting.

Depends on what broke. Could be any number of things, but you are looking at a pretty good tear-down of the engine, so get ready for a big bill.

Tail pipe and the oil breather on the catch-can.

LOL, ya I figured it is going to be a couple thousand in parts, but I need to start ordering stuff ASAP.
