why am i grinding when i go into 3rd?
Ok so i have an 06 base model with the 2.2 and the 5speed transmission. THis just started yesterday and what happens is that no matter what i do every single time i shift into 3rd it grinds (usually really bad but sometimes its minimal). this is also the same for reverse but that only happens when i am sitting still trying to put it into reverse.
Anyone have this problem? or have any solutions? I was just trying to get a quick idea of what was going on before i took it to the dealer. Thank you so much for all the help

You'll notice this to happen when you sit idle for a few minutes before shifting into reverse, it's common.
Before shifting into reverse, shift to first for a moment then to reverse, it won't grind.
Not sure about the thirs gear issue, you should have it looked at by your dealer.

yea well i have noticed the 1st to reverse thing works so thats what i have been doing. But yea i had planned on taking it to the dealer but since it was the transmission and i have no clue about anything to do with transmissions i wanted to know a basic idea of what it might be before i was to take it in.
Thanks for the fast replies guys.

Do all cobalts exhibit this problem, or is it just the base model? I'm strongly considering a Cobalt SS/SC, but I don't want to purchase one if the tranny is junk. Thanks.

Sorry, I spoke poorly- I meant to say it sounds like that's his problem- I'm pretty sure that the problem with mine is with the shift cable.
