Ummmmm, no...the molding around the windshield is ATTACHED to the glass on these vehicles, same with the new impalas. The tool you are referring to does not heat up at all, it's a razor, commonly referred to as a "cold knife". As for doing the process, once you have the windshield out, and the old urethane trimmed off the pinchweld, you have to use a special primer on the metal, and another special primer on the glass. Also, keep in mind that unless you know what you're doing, you run the serious chance of the cold knife flying out, and scratching the **** out of your paint...Good luck setting it properly to if you don't have the technique down...How do I know all this, because this is what I do everyday. I work for Safelite. Oh did I mention that when running the new urethane on the pinchweld it's best to use an automatic caulking gun, which retails for about 160 bucks(US)(www.equalizer.com), because with the new urethane technologies that are in use, the urethane sets up in about 8 minutes.

The reason why the price is high is because the vehicles are still relatively new.

Well what I described is what I did on my old 1993 Ford Probe. I had no problems replacing mine. New technology is annoying. I was just giving him an idea.

I have a problem going against the grain of the system. If I lacked the judgment to get the glass coverage to begin with, I should have to pay the price. It's sad to see that other people would lack the nads to face the music if they were in the same situation.

Does anyone who isn't an advocate of insurance fraud know the approximate price range of a new windshield for a Cobalt or Pursuit?

Thanks.

That's extremely expensive, Do you live near the border? perhaps you could call around in the states and see if you can find it cheaper. A windshield replacement really should not cost more than $300.00 or so.

the cost depends on the vehicle...For instance, a windshield for an S-10 will only run about 200 or so, whereas a windshield for a Land Rover Discovery or a first gen Saturn will cost about a grand, due to the fact that the Discovery has a heating element inside the lamination, and the Saturns have two extreme bends at the corners. For our cars, you're looking at 3-500. I don't see any reason why it should be more expensive.

GM list is $489.50 CDN, and I can sell a jobber glass for around $250. Installation is generally 1 - 1.5 hours.

Glass coverage, had I gotten it, wouldn't have been that much more. I hardly think that the insurance is a rip off.
Well glass coverage in most policies is merely above and beyond the regular comp coverage, so you *should* be able to just cough up the $200 ded and have insurance cover the rest, so you can have a clean conscience. And check first, but a claim that small also should not affect your rates.

I personally have been screwed by an insurance company before, so maybe I'm just not as caring as others are to the fatess of their wallets.

I had mine replaced on the cobalt ss for 270 plus tax. I have a $300 deductable but by paying out of pocket I don't have a claim against me. If you are in the kitchener area I can refer you. I can also get in touch with someone in GTA area (oshawa) that will do it for the same price

I'm in Regina, Saskatchewan. I asked whether or not I could use my comp. insurance to cover it (I have a $200 deductible), but was told that no, I couldn't do that.

Damn, that's an ass of an insurance company then. I would suggest you dig up your policy and see if it specifically mentions anywhere that glass isn't covered. The job of an insurance agent is two-fold. 1. put on the friendliest face possible, 2. pay as little as possible. Sometimes they're not too good at #1, but they'll only get fired if they're not good at #2.

Good luck in getting a good price!
