I put a new head on and decided to do the timing chain as well a few weeks ago. Now I'm getting an s257 so I decided to do springs and cams. I took apart the tensioner and reset it but when I tighten it in the head, it doesn't tension the chain...grabbing a new one but any thoughts? I've reset the tensioner a few times and no luck

 

When you reset the tensioner you have to hit it after installing it to get it to fully release.

 

I've already tried that. Must not be hitting it hard enough lol

 

If you haven't, look up online exactly where and how to hit it. It's a firm whack, but if you do it right it's not bad and it's obvious it worked.

 

Well I'm guessing the head of the bolt is where it needs to be hit because it's got the raised end

 

It needs to be hit right in line where the tensioner presses against the guide. Gm doesn't give a picture on where, just a description where it needs to be struck and it has to collapse more than 2mm before it releases.

 

It would've been nice if my Haynes manual included this information ffs.

Surprised it doesn't. You are resetting it correctly right? The inner shaft gets pressed down and you turn it to lock it in to the notches.
