How the REPUTATION system works
I want to share all the information I have gathered about the REP system on cobaltss.net.
REP BASICS
First off the rep system is designed as a way for you to give someone a pat on the back for a good post or helpful information. Or a way to give someone a kick in the ass for flaming, trolling, or spreading false information.
Now everyone on cobaltss.net has rep and you can view there boxes underneath there screen name. There is no way to tell an exact number of much rep a member has, but the green boxes are a way for you to get a general idea.
The way the boxes work is that each dark green box is 100 rep points.
So a user with one box:
has somewhere between 1 and 99 points. 2 boxes = 100 to 199 reps, 3 boxes = 200 to 299 reps, ect.
Now it gets tricky once you reach 500 rep points and get your fifth green box, the scale changes to one box every 200 points, and the box also changed color:
each of those boxes is worth 200 points, so after 500 points your next box will not come until 700 points, then again at 900, 1100, 1300, 1500.
HOW TO REP
Ok, now that you understand how the boxes work the next step is how do you give rep? That’s easy, with every post someone makes there is a scale under there name
if you click it you will see a box:

Now if you approve of the users comment you leave it at the default, and add your comment about the post if you wish.
If you find the post disagreeable you need to change the selection to "I Disapprove", again add a comment if you wish.
Be sure to add your username to the end of the comment so the member knows where the rep came from, as the system does not allow you to view who left the comment.
HOW TO VIEW REP
Ok, with all this repping going on I’m sure your eager to see how much rep you have, and the comments that have been left.
There are two ways to view this information.
First to just view how many rep points you have click the
under your own user name.
To view the comments people have left you, you will want to access your USER Control Panel. This can be found at the top of the page under the link USER CP.
This brings you to a screen similar to this where you can view the thread you received rep for, the date/time, and the comment left if any.

If you would like to view the post that you received the rep for, just click the link to the thread.
You will notice on the side of each entry into the rep screen there is a colored box, obviously
means positive, and
means negative. But what does that pesky little purple box:
stand for?? Well the meaning is somewhat clouded, but my best guess is that you received positive and negative rep for a post, or that you received rep from someone that has a red box or very little rep.
MORE REP INFO
Most of the info in this section is speculation about how the system works
There is a maximum amount of people you can rep in a 24hr period; the number is believed to be in the range of 15ppl/24hrs.
You can only rep someone so often, there is no exact info available on this, but it seems that you must rep at least 30ppl before you can re-rep a user.
(It is very unclear as to the frequency that you can re-rep a user)
The more rep you have the more points your rep is worth when you give it out.
Example; if you have 85 rep points and you give someone rep they may only gain 2 rep points, but if someone with 633 rep points gives the same user rep they may gain 8 points (These values are not accurate, just examples to explain my theory)
Also, when you leave someone negative rep I believe it is worth 1/2 of what your positive rep is, example your positive rep is 8, so your neg rep is worth 4.
Some people believe that using the word "great" within your rep comment increases the amount the rep is worth, there haven't been any confirmed studies on this though.
It has also been brought to my attention that your post count may also have a small influence on how much your rep is worth.
If you have any more questions please feel free to ask, or if you have any more info about rep that you would like added please let me know.
Disclaimer: The information is this thread is all theory based on experiences I've had using the rep system.

Cool, I was wondering how the whole thing worked...what about the phrase for each box...it changes if you place your mouse over it under your name in a post...do you have a listing for them?

IMO i think that the points given when you rep someone is dependant not only on how much rep you have but your post count also. i was giving 1 point to people when i had 89 points (only about 500 posts) but people with the same amount or less rep points and about a thousand more points than me were giving 2 points, just something to think about.
oh and how often you can rep a person is either not time based or a lot longer than seventy two hours.
