I've timed LNF's on the ground same as I have with LSJ's, but i've done more than a few and know what to look for. I wasn't aware of a special tool needed for the VVT gears, that's interesting though.

I personally hate that zip-tie stuff, it makes people feel too complacent that it works safely when it's actually very prone to issues.
