Eglin AFB area! - Fort Walton Beach
Hey guys,
Just got reassigned to Eglin AFB.
What's the area like, where should I live, is on base housing nice? Any suggestions or tips about the area would be amazing.
Thanks!

Base housing is real nice, excellent commissary and BX. Housing North of the base is less costly - further from the Gulf the better. Make sure you get some good snorkeling equipment, water is clear and in the 80s during the summer -- If you're into swimming you'll like it! Traffic in the summer is a bummer in FWB, Destin, and on Hwy 98. 20 minutes to I-10.
Niceville, outside of gate, Crestview 30 minutes North (Hwy 85). Can also check Shalimar (between base and FWB) and Mary Ester (west of FWB). Base housing office can provide housing info -- make sure to check with them.
cool thanks. It's my first assignment...commissioning in May. I haven't been assigned a sponsor yet, so hopefully they will give me a hand with moving and any questions I have

iv been trying to PCS to eglin/hurlburt for about a year now. i have a lot of friends there, and my fiancee is from navarre. we make about 4-5 trips down there a year for vacations, we are only about 6 hours away. FWB and destin are probably the most convenient and nicer off base places to live IMO. On base isnt bad at all but i prefer to live off base myself.
I was stationed there for about 9 months during EOD school. It's a good size base, and extremely large land mass wise if you include all the ranges. The Comissary and BX a decent, and most of the facilities are pretty nice. The area is phenominal during the spring/summer seasons. The beaches are beautiful, the water is georgious carribean blue, and there is a ton of stuff to do and places to go. Destin is a tourist attraction for the most part, but is an extremely nice area. The BAH of $1250 may seem ok, but housing in that area is a bit expensive. Most people I know stationed there now are living in the Crestview area as it's the most affordable. You are one lucky guy for getting stationed there as it's one of the nicer bases to be at. No more snow tires for you, you can rock custom wheels all year long and be lowered too!
The one thing you will have to get used to is the heat and humidity. Nothing like walking out the door after taking a shower and sweating instantly.
You'll get used to it though. If you have anymore questions or need more info PM me and I'll get them answered the best I can or get ahold of my buddies stationed there for you.

I live in Fort Walton Beach, retired from Hurlburt Field (Air Force) in 1997. Everyone's been right on with info so far. I work in Destin, so the touristy part is absolutely true. The traffic along the Gulf and beaches is kinda rough in the summer, but, hey, you can't keep people away if they want to come. Any qustions or info needed, let me know. Welcome to the area. Its a nice area The cops are ok just dont go flying down the road. The club scene is ok if you like going to the clubs. Every Saturday Night in Pensacola there is a big car meet at this place called Bayfront its cool. When will you arrive?
If you are going to live in base housing, try to get your name on the waiting list for the new houses they have in hidden oaks. I used to work in housing maintenance as a civilian and some of the old houses look good and some look terrible. They were built back in the 40's and 50's but overall Eglin A.F.B. is a beautiful place. I live in Crestview which is about 20-25 miles from the base (depending on where you want to live North or South of I-10) and the houses are the most affordable compared to Niceville and Valparaiso.
The area is awesome, I didnt know any of ya'll is from this area, and Ive been here about 3 months. Everything said above is true but the cops statement, they are pretty bad here....You just gotta know where not to speed......I ned some info about a cheap good place to get a body kit painted, and exhaust work done if anyone can help
