You should actually eat 6 meals a day. 'Closed fist' size in portions. And you need to drink tons and tons of water on top of regularly exercising. He will want to focus on aerobics but can also do light weight training so his body doesn't get used to the same thing as fast. If he just runs, he will plataeu extremely quick.

Exercise and a healthy diet. Not crash diets or pills. If you lose weight through exercise and a reasonable diet, you may actually keep it off. Plus it will be better for your self-confidence. Crash diets and pills are not good for self-confidence because there is no real sense of accomplishment.
If you want to loose weight fast and are just looking to loose around 20-30lbs try the "master cleanse diet", I would say it is a fast since you dont have any solid food just liquid. You have 1 ounce grade b maple syrup, 1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice and about 1/10 teaspoon cayenne pepper to every 8 ounces of water. Just drink that about 6-8 times a day and dont eat anything, it will detox your body and you will feel better than ever after. I lost about 10-12 pounds in 4 days. Just good "Master Cleanse Diet" or "Beyonce Diet" and you will see what I am talking about.
