Converting 05 base cobalt to 5 lug
Converting 05 base cobalt to 5 lug
Hey,
I've done some reading on here about conversions and different parts that are compatible between models. The question I have is to convert to 5 lug is it as simple as changing the hubs to the 5 lug hubs?
On the back would an axle off a car with 5lug be able to bolt onto my base? I think it would be easier and cheaper to do that instead of doing the disc brake swap.
If I assumed something incorrectly here please inform me.
Thanks

I'm going to throw this out there to get it out of the way. aside from rear disk why 5 lug? you loose out on a much larger and typicly cheaper wheel selection.
i wont lie i want 5 lug and rear disk but somebody will bring this up lol

You're right Slowbalt I like the look of the SS wheels and would go with those. Guess I didn't realize that the other models had 5lug drums. I had thought all the 5 lug had rear discs.
Since i have a bearing going out I might as well swap over to the 5lug.
Thanks for your answers.

Powell makes a set up for converting to read disk.
As for the swap, i did the swap for the larger lsj front brakes, since my car does not have abs the rears always lock up before the front when braking hard. Switching to the lsj front brakes makes them balanced. There's no real need to swap the whole axle, that's expensive and more work, yes if you use an SS rear you will get a larger rear sway bar but it's not needed, just buy one and bolt it in. Way easier and cheaper.
All you need for the swap onthe rear is the hubs, and drums. You don't even have to take the shoes off, each rear hub is held in by 4, I believe 14mm, bolts. It comes right out. Driver side was a little harder then passenger because of the spring oriantation (I guess you could take it out I didn't feel like it).
Front is just as easy. Hardest part without an air compressor wil be the axle nut. Hubs are held in with three bolts. You might need a big hammer/air hammer to free it up once it's unbolted.
Oh and something is different about the parking brake cables I think. Don't know what...
