Cutting Springz
Cutting Springz
I just ordered Sportline springs, and it said a lowering rate of 1.6 in the front, and 1.8 in the back. And when u measure it, after being installed it aint gonna be much of a difference. My friend who has a civic said that I should cut the springs atleast an inch more, as he did with his car. (he said it wont affect alignment if done in a shop by a professional). What do you guys think? should i cut them? and how much should i cut them?
(I have a Base LS coupe, riding stock rims)
Thanks,

hahaha. ofcourse ur friends got a civic . no offense or anything but they are known to cutting there springs. but as far as the sportline springs. I would not cut them at all. It lowerd my car 2 and 2.5 inches. So there measurements are not percise. trust me cuz iv done it. if you want take a look at these pics of my car posted below. before and after lowering it.
i hope this helps.

I think that is the lowering rate of the sportlines on the SS. Its going to drop your ls over 2" and trust me you dont want to go any further. There are plenty of pics in the gallery of cobalts dropped on sportlines. I used the pro kit springs from eibach and I am happy with the results, the spring drop was only 1.6, 1.8 but it eliminated well over 2 in from the wheel well. You drop more than 2" on stock shocks and struts and they wont last long. Hell if you are using sportlines on non-ss suspension I dont give them long.
First off, welcome to the site, and....I'd recommend running a search for this sort of question in the future, because I'm about to give you the nice version of the most likely answer you'll get. With that said, if you cut your springs, you deserve every ounce of heartache you'll be receiving from that choice. Ever wonder why when you see a ricer drive their car over what would seem like an almost non-existant bump, and their car bounces like it just went over a moon crater? It's because they cut the springs. Now that I've given you the nicest answer I can, I'll give you the simple science behind it. Springs have a certain degree of stability and strength based on their size, if you alter that size, you compromise those factors. When it comes to your suspension, you don't get slammed around because of these. When shorter springs are manufactured, their strength is increased, so you don't get almmed around, even though you are sitting lower. Cut the spring, you lose degrees of strength, thus bouncing you around the car. If I'm wrong on any of this, someone please correct me, because this is what I was told.

The person who claims He's your friend, Is not your friend. LOL
Cutting springs is dumb, And More importantly, DANGEROUS! And a professional WILL NOT cut your springs, They know how DUMB an idea that is. If you cut your springs, You are risking your life. Did you notice he's driving a CIVIC? Did he cut his springs? Probably not if he knows ANYTHING.

I know everyone just repeats what they have heard so I'm not gonna argue with them. In essence, they are right...however how much you cut makes a big difference, also how even the cut is between all 4 sets of springs. One coil off a spring may not affect the ride too much, just cutting them all even is a challenge. Now what most Civic guys do is hack off half the spring with a hacksaw or something real shitty, stick them on their 12 year old stock struts and bounce around town. If your buddy did this then you no longer need to take car advice from him.
Your car does not need to be that low anyway so why in the hell would you do it? That ricer drop is not cool looking, tucking 16s is not hot. Sportlines get rid of the wheel gap and there is no need to go any further. If you want lower then spend the money on a true coilover setup...when they arrive that is.

Thnx For the Help
I chose not to cut the springs. But i havent even recieved them yet from the seller, hopefully I'll get it by friday. I was just wondering how much work I'd have to do to install it. I asked around, and people said the best way is to get a professional to do it.... How much do you think it'll cost to get it installed?
Thanks
Thanks
do it yourself. it will take like 2 hours top w/ o a spring compresor. but go rent one at auto zone now so u will have it for a week so u will be ready to go when u get it. if u have that tool it will prolly take u an hour. then just go get an allignment afterwards
