Drum for Disk?

I have a 2.2 coupe, only my front brakes are disk brakes. What is involved to get my rear brakes set to disk as well?

Thanks for that bud, I did search. I didn't know the right phrase which I now see would be "rear brake conversion", but not knowing that, I was searching for things like "disk to drum", which didn't bring up any results.

Another question though, I've only been able to find the SSBC rear brake conversion as a big brake kit. Wouldn't this be kind of out of whack if I just have the stock sized rotors in the front brakes? If not performance wise, at least visually? If I want them balanced looking with those I'd have to upgrade the front to big brakes as well. Are there any other conversion kits keep them the stock rotor size?

I asked a question about this as well and was told that the conversion doesn't increase stopping power it just looks good basically.

this is the only conversion kit to date that i know of..you could also rip the ENTIRE brake system out of a wrecked sc or ss and install that but you would have to get the hubs too for the 5lug and new rims...

they do make a front big brake conversion kit too...so you could do the entire brake system at once...

it does int certain situations, but if you dont plan on racing it...then its not that big of a deal...i am going to do this eventually myself...why not lol, but its not required per say

here is your front brake kit:

it's because majority of the stopping power comes from the front anyways. it's basically an appearance mod.

o, and if you order from the link above (cobal performance parts) you're not going to get your order i would stay far away from them.

Actually I have really been wondering about that. The rims I want are the 5 lug pattern, so I have been looking for 4 lug rims that look similar but haven't had much luck. How difficult would it be to completely replace the front and rear brake system with a 5 lug, either from a wrecked cobalt, or from new parts? I wouldn't do it myself, I'd have a brake place do all the hard work, but what do you expect that would run cost wise?

And if I went with the conversion kits, I'd go through Gravana.

Alot!! you would need to purchase an entire system...take it to a shop, pay them for the labor, and such...your best bet would be to get the rims you want redrilled for the 4lug..will be cheaper in the long run to do it this way...

Can most wheels be re-drilled? I would just imagine that a 5 lug wheel being drilled for a 4 lug would end up with some weird looking holes and wouldn't be very secure...

These are the wheels I would want drilled for 4 lug, seems like there's not much room left for re-drilling holes:

I am still fuzzy on how....i think you have it done before it is drilled out in the first place...cheaper over all i know...

Only certain wheels are offered in blanks and can be drilled and most of them have a cap over the lugnut area. Most wheels are predrilled by the factory that is making them.

Lots of Money, Lots of time, lots of unnecessary effort for pretty much an appearance mod.

as far as 4 to 5 lugs... I would sugest A) look for new rims or B) sell your 2.2 and get an SS

Not being a dick... just being a realist

Junkyard FTW!...go find an SS, pull the brakes off the back (though they are 5 lug), get some 4 lug rotors about the same size...mount the calipers and brake lines...put it all together....

if you ask me though...there is much more involved with that...it can be done...at a cost...and alot of time...

i may do this....and write a how to....lol

yeah its a pain but basically you need parking brake, rotors, lines, pads, calipers, mounting brackets maybe proportioning valves

i was thinking about this though AEM or someone makes a swap that is NOT a big brake swap for civics that are 4x100 i wonder how that would work?

If you find a SS within 150 miles of us let me know. I have been to yards as far as J-ville and C-town to no avail.

Did any of the 4 lugs come with disks?

the disc to drum brake ratio is 70% front 30% rear disc is 60% to %40 give or take, to put disc brakes in the rear would increase stopping, not worth the trouble in 4 lug

i did the swap years back. it seemed to be much better on auto-x track. rear brakes grab better and lock when u pull ebrake w/ disc where the drums just acted as slowing me down when i pulled ebrake the same amount. personally i like to get the ass end out sometimes in bends

Get a cobalt SS rear axle beam that has the calipers and rotors from a junkyard is your best bet for the money.
