How much to lower? What size rim?

I really want to lower my base cobalt but i'm not sure if i should go with the pro kit or the sportline kit from eibach. I really want to go with the sportline kit but I don't want to buy a rim that will rub on my car. I want to either get 18's or 17's but with a good size tire so I don't bend my rim when I hit a pot hole. Also will lowering your damage anything to you transmission or anything? Please help

I would get a pro kit and after you get it dropped get it realigned. with my cavalier I had 17" rims with 215-45-17 kuhmo tires. never bent a rim or anything cause the tires were beefy, and I drove like a mad man over bumps.

I went with 225/40/18's they have a sidewall of 3.5" compared to the 215/45/17's 3.8". The speedometer is 2mph off @ 60mph until I get back to dealer to get it calibrated.
