koni yellows HELP??
koni yellows HELP??
hey guy recently got a pair of rear konis off a member on here that are ready to put on but on the forums I've read that from stiffest to softest setting is just two spins around but when I was messing with them today I could just keep turning and turning and could squeeze it together and it didn't get stiffer? Any help?
Put bottom of shock in vise, compress fully, turn top counterclockwise until it stops and dont use force. It'll then be on full soft, 1/4 to 1/2 turn clockwise from full soft is the good spot for the balt. And its only rebound that you're adjusting, the compression won't change. Even on full soft the rebound extended twice as slow as the TC shocks
I'm about to have custom springs made which will lower my car all the way down to about an eighth to a quarter inch off the tires so I got the konis to make it stiff so that the car won't squat or sink down at all with weight inside. Any ideas on how stiff?
Stiffness is mostly in the spring rate, the shocks contribute a bit but their job is to regulate wheel motion. Consult John Powell for balt suspension advice, he'll set you up
Just be lower and stiffer basically.. like I can tell the shop how low I was them to sit and they'll make them to the specs. I do like the h&r's but I would really like even a little lower than them..
but your right, it probably will.
Either way not trying to be wrong for wanting to do it. If it doesn't work than it doesnt. But noone trys new stuff anymore. I just figured I could make my own setup the way I wanted... Guess that makes me wrong. I'm not trying to have it ride like a caddy.
Never said you were wrong for doing it. But just taking an educated guess based on the fact that you couldnt operate the shocks I determined it was unlikely you would be able to spec out a spring that rode/handled adequately. But if youve got someone that makes customs springs that cool, especially if they are reasonably priced, Id be interested to hear more about them and exacly what you are doing honestly.
I agree with Maven. You already lack knowledge of how the suspension works, and how aftermarket shocks work. Don't complicate things by attempting non-standard springs. Don't think they're custom either. They are probably just going to use a sleeve kit and use linear springs, which come with their own set of drawbacks. That or they'll tell you it's custom, and just give you some off the shelf spring.
Regarding setting the Konis, you don't need to put them in a vice clamp, though that's what the instructions say. Just put the bottom on a piece of wood. Compress them FULLY, and then turn all the way to soft, then set it about 1/4 turn off that. Like someone already mentioned, Konis are rebound adjustable, not compression adjustable, and they will not prevent your car from squatting under acceleration. That is compression valving.
Go get the instructions from Koni NA's site. It takes like 30 seconds to look them up. Do NOT set them more than 1/2 turn off full soft. Any more than that is WAAAAY too much based on the dyno shock I have.

ride quality aside, my main concern with going lower would be the driveline angle. i run h&r race springs, they are one of the most aggressive drops out there. i have always had vibration under load, powell rotated mounts helped but didnt get rid of it. i have already had a set of axles fail on me. i know the problem stems from the angle of the driveline, on the manual trans cobalts it wasnt great and lowering makes it worse, to the point the axles can bind up. i love the way my car looks, has an awesome stance, however i think im going to raise it back up to get rid of the vibration, after 4 years, im just sick of it.
