Labour & Parts cost for calipers?
Labour & Parts cost for calipers?
Hey guys, so I went to get my parking brake checked out today, I need a new left rear caliper because when the park brake is engaged, only the passenger side grabs. Driver side wheel moves freely. He said the cable was fine. However, I'm being charged $330 for JUST labour. This is to replace both rear calipers, both rear pads(mine as well while im at it), and adjust the parking brake. I don't know much about brakes but this doesnt seem right. I could justify $330 WITH parts, but not without. Any suggestions? I will be going to a few shops tomorrow to get quotes and second opinions.
Whats the labor rate where you live/are going? Whats getting done, are they cutting the rotors? flushing the full brake system?
If they are just replacing the rear calipers thats probably a labour charge of about 2.5hrs. If they are cutting the rotors for the brake service and doing a full brake flush I could easily see how they would charge that.... 2.0 for brake service, add .3 per side to replace the caliper then 1.0 for the flush, thats 3.6hrs. $330 would put them at about $91/hr, perfectly normal for a dealer.
BTW........double that price for ACDelco part calipers are over $125 each......

Then your gonna need to find a shop willing to deal or someplace that has labour under $60/hr because its gonna be real hard to find a shop to do that job for less than 3.0hrs billable time. These times are pretty much industry standard.
I think buying workshop manuals and doing it yourself is a great idea....
holy hell.. We'd charge like $90-150 labour to do that job. Mind you we're only a two man private garage charging $46/hr labour. Rear brakes is a pretty straight forward job. If you've got any mechanical ability I'd say just do it yourself. Easier if you've got a buddy to help bleed the brakes after. But it is possibly to bleed them on your own.
