Question Question about Springs

I did some research and springs are a heck of alot cheaper that a body kit to make my car look lower. The problem is I know nothing about springs. I know thats spring are rated in inch drop but I dont know what that means? What is the stock height on a Base Cobalt? Are there special tools required to install springs? How difficult are spring to install?

I still wanna put 17" or 18" rims on the car after winter. I dont want to go too low because I live in Indiana and we do get periods fo heavy snow in the winter. You can refer to my previous discussion at https://www.cobaltss.net/forums/appearance-48/how-these-rims-gonna-look-133043/.
Thanks!

search button is a great tool... but here is the simple things...
you'll need a compressor tool (rented from autozone maybe) and some other lil things. you'll also need a tire alignment after so, that all fun and games. i personally think the only springs that are worth a price tag are the eibach sportlines...i love mine. perfect. eliminate the horrid wheel gap 2.2's have and gives it a sporty look.

Are there special tools required to install springs? --compressor thingy and an alignment are needed.
How difficult are spring to install? -- not bad i hear. but if you know nothing, i suggest a dealer or suspension place

If you get Eibach Sportline springs (which i highly recommend). You will drop your car 2" in the front and 2.5" in the rear (assuming yours is a non SS Cobalt). You will have lower centre of gravity, allowing your car to handle better in turns. And also makes the car look so much better. Only down fall to them is you can really feel the road. By that i mean, any little bump you will feel big time. Any large bump can cause damage to the struts after awhile. Everyones cars are different and driving habbits are different. My friend had to replace his stock struts after 6 months...heard another person lasted over a year.

As for the tools you need. Standerd tools to take your wheels off, Rachet set, Spring Compressor (can rent one from a dealership or somewheres) And a impact air gun (there is a way of doing it without the gun but its hard as hell)

For me personally. I'm not good with tools and cars...But i did my rear springs in 50mins by myself. The front ones i brought to my local dealership and got them to do for $180. After you get springs its highly recommended you get a alignment done. I could be wrong here so people please correct me if i am. But i doubt you would have problems driving with 17's but im not sure about 18's

get the ssc springs... they are the best bang for the buck

18" rims... ssc springs.. not to be confused with ss/sc springs.

i just put eibach sportlines on my car 2 days ago. i live in canada and winter drive so if i can rock them so can you! it took all of 3 hours to install by myself at an extremely leisurely pace. they actually ride fairly close to factory i found and look 1000 times better. they are fairly pricey as far as lowering springs go, but if you buy ebay knock offs etc, you will be dissapointed.

When did you buy your springs? That's Eibach's reccomended sale price. Other than them the highest price i saw would have been $290 at cobalt addiction.

i really like them. they are starting to wear in and stuff but i hit my exhaust tip on something and it caused some of my bumper to melt haha. but with those, my strut brace, and my TTR sway bar, it handles like god.

Question Is it worth it??

For you guys that have done a spring install, here my situation. I don't want to here from you if you don't have aftermarket springs PLEASE. Honest opinions please......
I don't have air tools or any sort of garage. I live in an apt building downtown. I shopped around for prices to have my springs professionally installed. I check with 4 different places and believe it or not, my dealer had the cheapest price for the install including a 4 wheel alignment. $380. I really don't want to pay that kinda money when I could install them myself and just have the $70 alignment done afterwards. I have a lot of hardcore engine mod experience from my previous cars, but I've NEVER touched my Cobalt. I think things might be a little difficult for me since I don't suspension experience but I've never done it before so idk. Is it worth the $380 to have it done professionally with the labor warrentied??

Ya I know. That thought keeps coming into my mind. I just dont want to **** anything up. I guess I kinda scared of the thing. Its the first NEW car Ive ever owned. It is sorta stupid to pay that much for an install. It sorta defeats the purpose of even being on a site like this huh? Adn just think all this doubt is coming from a guy(ME) who took a n/a 3800 and turbocharged it. LOL! I feel like a ***** right now

dude its not hard. dont pay for it. you dont even need the compressors in the rear. You literally pull them out and replace them. and just go buy a torque wrench. You'll need it sometime in the future anyways.

you will be fine. just take your time and relax if your a bit concerned. dont worry im 18 and this is my first new car too its every paycheck i receive. if i was able to do it, you will too. the backs are so easy you literally take one bolt out on each side at the bottom of the shock and the whole rear axle assembly drops. the springs arent held in by anything you just pull them out and put the new ones in. the fronts take a bit more but with the how to and common sense, someone that doesnt even know cars could do it.
