Replacing rear struts help?

So my mechanic said my rear struts need to be replaced. After clicking around on the Internet I'm not totally sure what part he is referring to. Does he mean the rear shock absorbers? When I go over bumps yo can really hear and feel a thud or knocking noise coming from the back.

I'd like to do the job myself to save money if possible, and if he means the shock absorbers it should be a pretty easy job, right?

I have a 2006 Cobalt SS/NA... FE3 suspension

Thanks for the help,
Justin
