Location Error? Can't start car or write to pcm
Location Error? Can't start car or write to pcm
Well i've recently been working with Bill trying resolve my issue. I had a write fail in the middle, and now of course the car doesnt start and the wonderful security light is on.
Whenever I try to write now as soon as it starts writing the vcm I get the error code "VCM Write Failed at loc: 9000 Error: Timed out" Bill said he has yet to see a location error on a cobalt yet. Apparantly this is a wiring issue affecting communication.
I'm going to try and unhook any aftermarket electronic i've put in the car, and see if this fixes the problem.
Has anyone else ran into this issue?

Simple suggestion I know, and you may have already tried this, but have you tried unplugging the PCM or simply cutting power to the car then reconnecting?
If it is somehow a memory issue, it may only be cleared when power is cut.
Aside from that, sorry, never seen this error.

Ya I unplugged the pcm, even left it out for a day or two and never made a difference. I have bought a new battery, checked every fuse in the car and changed every questionable one. Thinking about making a bench harness. I guess a few colorados have had this error. They also use the same P12 we have.
Try this...
Open a compare file, then go to "Write VIN/Tunerlock/VATS"
^ the option is grayed out until you open a compare file.
Let it begin to write, and watch as HPT crashes.
Once crashed, the PCM should go into recovery mode and you *should* be able to flash your tune normally. If it is a problem with the PCM, this should hopefully get it working again.
I've done this procedure many times in my tinkering, but I make no guarantees that it wont make things worse. lol
Edit: If the above doesn't work, then yeah it is most likely a communications issue of some sort. Keep in mind the PCM data wire goes straight to the OBD2 port without really passing through much else (its not on a CAN bus), so there isn't much that would affect that. You might need to test with a different PCM to rule out yours possibly being corrupted.

Ah ok. Have you ever done a write calibration to your PCM using someone elses tune file, or a tune for a car of a different year? Anything funky in this PCM's history?
Since you've pretty much tried everything, I'd jump on ebay and try to score another PCM if I were in your shoes. It could get expensive since you'd have to first buy it, then license it with HPT since it would be a different VCM ID.

Nothing funking in the pcms history. I could count on one hand how many times its been flashed. I was thinking the pcm was fried. But hpt support seems to think it is recoverable if a write entire can be forced to complete.
Yup! You may also need to do a security relearn. Heres how:

You disconnect the battery
Change the PCM
Reconnect the battery
get in the car turn the key on
let it sit for 10 minutes or until the security light on your dash goes off
then turn the car off
and turn it back on sit for another 10 minutes or until the light goes off
then turn it off again
and turn back on and sit for 10 more minutes or until the light goes off
and it should start right up after shutting it off one more time
but you have to make sure you DO NOT touch or use anything electrical in the car like the radio and stuff because its learning the PCM. you also cannot open any doors or anything
you must do this even to switch back to your stocker

Well disconnected every aftermarket electronic on the car.
It seems that Error loc 9000 doesnt come up anymore. It still fails writing at the same location, but now I get Error loc A000.
Even by opening a compare file I cant enable the "Write VIN/Tunerlock/VATS" option.
Anyone selling a used LSJ PCM? Might just go this route and hopefully solve my headache. So frustrated now.

Have you tried the latest beta? While I don't have an LSJ, I remember reading something about a file having to be deleted than you can try again for LSJ's. Maybe post on the HPT forum in the GM 4 cyl section. Imphat and BYT tune a few hundred LSJ's.
Ya I do have the latest beta version. That never fixed it. And I have tried deleting that file numurous times and still keep getting an error code. Thanks though, open to all feedback at this point.
Yeah deleting VCM Suite.cfg works when HPT gets confused about which bus to use after having connected your box to a CAN vehicle. Since the LSJ uses VPW, HPT goes "wtf wheres my CAN?" and refuses to connect.
One of the betas fixed this problem a while back, but it doesnt appear to be the case here.
Thats interesting the error would change after removing misc. electronics.. what battery voltage is HPT showing at the bottom of the main HPT window?
Yup.
On the C1 (J1-Blue) connector on the PCM, you just need 12v power (pin 20), ignition power (pin 19), data (pin 16), and ground (pin 56).
On the OBD2 port, you need Data (pin 2), ground (pins 4 & 5), and 12v power (pin 16).
Thats about it. Just connect the dots and you have a simple pcm workbench. That should definitely tell you whether it is a car wiring issue or just the PCM.

Found that to, so should make it easier.
I'll check what voltage HPT says, never thought to check. Litterally had just taken my brand new battery off the charger this morning (said 100%), before trying to write again.
