01-02 gti

a buddy of mine at work has been smack talking for about four months and we finally closed the store together tonight. i went out to my car a few min before he did. i let it warm up and as i was getting ready to leave i pulled up and said lets go. so i let him have a smoke, and he continued with a "this isn't the only thing i'm smoking tonight." so i laughed and said ok. we pull up to a light and decide to go on green. The roads were a little wet so i took off at about 1900 rpms and that was probably the best launch i had ever had. needless to say i immediately jumped almost a car until the end of first, chirp second and continue to pull about 3 cars ahead and shut down half way through third. we roll down a popular street and no one is out so we proceed to the next destination. this road is straight for about a mile with nothing on it, not even lights. so we take off from about a 40 roll. i pull about 5-6 cars and shut down at about 130 or so. he calls me since its cold and tells me that he's not ready to mess with the cobalt for a while. i continue to tell him he won't for a long time since stage 2 is gonna be on order in a week or so.

ss mods: injen intake

gti: chipped, bov, intake

From a roll, I would've thought the GTI and the Cobalt would've been close.

yea it was somewhat close from a dig, he seemed like he was a pretty good driver, but once the real power for the cobalt came out during mid second and third it was over.

if it really had the work done to it than it should have been a very equal race. Maybe he just sucks at driving? Good kill none-the-less

this guys post leads me to believe it was an early 90's or mid 90's gti.. not a new one... you chip a new one and slap an intake on it, it would own a cobalt ss s/c with just an intake
my $.02

i would agree this is prolly late 90's to early 00's, but i dont really agree with your statement a GTI beat a cobalt from a roll with just intake.... maybe if it was chipped then yes, but i think a stock ss/sc will still beat a GTI with ONLY intake...

A chipped 1.8t is quick but it still needs supporting mods. For example, turbo inlet piping, turbo back exhuast, diodes on the injectors, and the list goes on. With all those mods expect a 1.8t gti to do the 1/4 in no lower than 14.0. I realize that a stock ss/sc should be doing the quarter in 14.4 to 14.8 which leads me to say if this GTI was just chipped with an intake, he's running high 14's. Those puny turbos may be pushing 20 psi but its like blowing through a straw.

There is a 30 HP difference between the 01 & 02 GTI 1.8T. Even chipped that difference is still there. My guess is that this was an 01....not the 02.

Wrong. The only difference between the 01 and 02 is engine management software. They run the same K03 Sport. Once chipped the difference goes away.

Not all 1.8T engines will produce the same amount of horsepower chipped....It depends on the ECU, which is based off of the year.....check APR's site for their dyno numbers for each ECU...

haha exactly..he won't even say **** about the cobalt any more. just a quick question..i know it should be posted in stage kits..but i'm torn between getting stage two : or getting stage one and a 2.9 : or going with an aftermarket kit for like a 2.8 or something..the 2.8 i'd be worried because i dont think there are too many people around here to do tuning, i'm leaning for the stage 1 and 2.9, then again i have no idea who could put the pulley on for me. what do you guys think? and yea i'm kinda worried about warranty but it wouldnt stop me if i would save money for more speed

not to but in or anything but the injectors arent maxed out on them, you dont need a diode with these cars (unless going to a big turbo and not getting "big turbo software"). as for the 14 second thing i have seen STOCK 1.8ts with slicks run 13.8's (back in the day). if you have a good driver the car will run mid 13's all day. they see 20 psi at 2700rpm (somewhere around there) and at redline they are down to 12psi.

does your friend want to step it up???lol

nice kill man.

The AWW motor was in the 01 GTI's and the AWP was in the 02+ GTI's. They both came with the same KO3 sport. The AWD motors which had less power only has the puny KO3 which is why it's dyno's are lower. If you notice from the chart, both the AWW and AWP motors have the same output even though stock they had a 30 hp difference.

I will agree that all 1.8t's are not created equal, however in the years of question, 01 and 02, they have the same output. The killer 1.8t is the older AEB model found int he audi's because of their big ports on the head.
