07 Imprezza vs 07 Cobalt LS

So here it goes. I'm coming home from work, and I see the traffic starting to build up at my exit, so I get off one early. As I'm cruisin on the access road, I see a 07 Suburu Imprezza turning onto the same road. It has a big shelf spoiler, and a fart can. That's all I can tell from the outside. So I immediately roll down my windows as I am getting closer. It sounds kinda mean, so I didn't want to do anything crazy.

Then I think to myself. YOU HAVEN'T RACED IN MONTHS JUST DO IT!!

So I finally cruise up to him, and he does a half assed accelleration, trying to egg me on. It works, I give a lil, and then see a car up ahead about 100 feet, and let off and brake, he does the same. I drop back behind him. Now he flicks on his blinker right, and I do the same (since its on my way home) And he punches it a bit, to beat the next light that is right there, he runs the yellow. I brake and get stuck. DAMN!! Oh well, just not my night, so I wait for the light, and see up ahead, he is slowing down. It looks like he is waiting for me!

So I get up there pretty quick, just doin 50. He must have been goin 35. We come up to a light, and he's kiddy corner ahead of me, at the front. And an old 90 something POS BMW is next to me, behind the imprezza. The light goes green, and he gives a little gas, and the BMW follows along. I say to hell with this minivan in front of me, and follow behind the Bimmer. Now there is about an 1/8th mile gap between the Imprezza and the BMW. But I have now commited, and I am not giving up. Now we are far enough ahead of the minivan for me to get over. As soon as I get over, the BMW guy guns it, I hammer it, and pull hard away from the BMW, and he realizes he brought a knife to a gun fight and backs off.

So as I finally get back close to the Imprezza, the light ahead goes red, and he gets over into the empty lane, with me right behind. Finally, we'll get up ahead, and race. Lets see if he goes hard off the line. Light goes green, and he hits it hard, I do to. I spin very little, and then we're gone. I came off the line so hard, I almost had to let off because I was gaining on him. I jump over a lane, and start pulling on him until about 60, where we start to slow down. Now we are side by side, and the traffic is pretty far behind, so we slow down to about 15mph, and he hits it again, and I just barely start to inch away. Next thing I know, I hear him shift, and now he's at my bumper and still trailing. I just love my first gear(see 3 paragraphs down, for those who don't know). I shift, and it chirps the tires. He's still falling back.

Next thing I know, he is in the left lane with his blinker on.

Sorry bud, maybe next time.

And another fantastic kill for the Cobalt LS 2.2L Automatic.

Now I know a bunch of peeps are gonna be callin BS, but I am telling the honest to god truth.

Cliff Notes for the lazy: (you really should read the whole story)

I just beat an Imprezza. I'll say it again, cause even I couldn't believe it when it happened. I just beat an Imprezza. I'm sure it was base model of course. But my 2.2L beating a 2.5L 173hp, 166ftlb Imprezza that wasn't stock is,... well, I dunno...surprising, I guess.

Cue peanut gallery....

It was actually completely debadged (+20whp ), except for something in the lower left hand corner of the trunk, that I couldn't really make out. It was the first new imprezza that I have seen, the only way I could tell was the way the body sticks out above each wheelwell (and the front grill in my rearview ).

Oh, and thanks.

well, ****, a 2.5 is good for like a 16.4 in the 1/4 mile... that should be a pretty fair run for a 2.2 balt.

something that you need to understand, a 2.2 litre is practically a big block in this class of cars, most of the time, engines from 2.0-2.5 litres are in mid sized japanese cars. (camry 2.4, accord 2.4, altima 2.5) so... using 1960s logic... putting an engine that is sized for a larger car into a smaller one makes it faster....

my point is thus, the impreza needs that much displacement to move it's awd ass around, so you, with a slightly less powerful engine (with a LOT less crap to spin) is more than a match for it.

True, but he started out with 25 more hp, and 14 more torque, and wasn't stock. True it weighs about 150-200lbs more. But come one, I am front wheel drive, and got out of the hole quicker than a AWD!! I thought that was something to be proud of.

Thanks for dashing the dreams of a fellow cobalt owner.

Oh wait, did I say Imprezza, I meant Imprezza WRX

And just realized, I went over 600 posts, I'm a senior member now.

a front drive will do better assuming that neither car has so much power that traction is an issue. which it isn't with a 2.2 auto.

Oh, it can be a big problem if I am on old asphalt (or Firebird Raceway). So bad, that I can only powerbrake to about 1500 rpms, and have to not floor it off the start. New asphalt, they stick. This race was on asphalt somewhere in between, a little spin, but not bad.
