2.4L SS Vrs 1987 MR2

hey guys, my buddy thinks he can beat me in his 87 MR2(The ones marketed for North America) (Not the Supercharged one). he has a custom exhaust built and took some emissions thing off of it. normaly i would have no worries but the thing is i just got my cobalt ss like 3 weeks ago and its my first standard car...i can drive it fine but im sure he can shift way better then me.

Just wondering if it will be a tight race or if he will blow the doors off of me, if anyone has any suggestions on how i should race please im all ears!

Thanks guys

i've had a lot of wheel time in an 87 MR2 and in a straight line, you'll take him pretty easy. when the roads get twisty... it'll be a fight. the MR2 is a cornering animal. lucky for you, the american ones were setup very mild. however, properly dialed in, you don't stand a chance in a corner, so don't try, you'll get hurt.

as far as how to race... few ideas.

#1 that's a 140hp car, don't underestimate it, it is quick, but it's not torquey, if you don't rush and let that big 2.4 use it's whole RPM band, you'll hand plenty of power. basically, get on it, when the shift light lights, shift.

#2 don't pay attention to him, worry about your car. he may get a harder launch than you because he's got more time behind the wheel of it, plus 2.4s launch like ****. again, take it easy, catch him in 2nd gear.

#3 once you do pass him, keep on it, those cars get faster and faster, don't shut down too quick.

#4 again, do NOT race him on a twisty road, you can NOT keep up.
