Cobalt SS/SC vs Mazda RX-8
from a stop- SS wonby a car length or maybe even more
from a 20 mph roll- SS won by about 1/2 car length.
30 mph roll- SS Won by about 1/2 car to 1 car length.
I was driving the SS, and my father was driving the RX-8...he doesnt own it. it was his Demo vehicle (works at a car dealership) which may have contributed to him losing... maybe he wasnt used to the clutch or shifting at such high RPM's (rotary engine kicks some sick high RPMs)
anyway
we decided to go have a little fun on a dead stip of highway. i won every race up to about 100 mph then i shut down. the car lengths that i won by im not too sure about... its what my father approximated, so it may have been more or less either way... i was impressed, needless to say, so was he

Rotary engines are cool, I had a 1980 rx7. it kicked ass. I thought it was pretty fast until my buddy decided to race me. he let me stay close until about 65, then floored his CORVETTE, yeah I lost hard. 4 speed old ass rx 7 against a new(at the time ) vette. it was fun anyways

The 8 is not really made for speed so I wouldn't be surprised if you beat him, I am actually shocked by how close it was. From a dig, and with a good launch, I think the 8 would probably be just as fast, but from a roll the 8 has some trouble.
I used to own an 8, and I can tell you that if the scenario that you described was accurate, a whole bunch of the stories I've heard on this site are BS. The RX-8 is only putting down somewhere between 180-190 (varies greatly). The car only has about 150 foot pounds of torque, and weights 3,000 pounds. So either something is wrong with this story, or something is wrong with a bunch of stories I’ve seen posted here.

However, like I said they are not meant for drag racing, they were designed to handle, and they do it very well. Try running your dad on a twisty road, he would make a mess of you. The 8 is just so responsive, and becuase you can always feel when the car is at its limits, really inspires confidence.
Also I don't see what motive your dad would have for lying, its not like he owns the car.

yeah the RX8 seems like its glued to the road... i was following him back to my my house, and he took a 90 degree turn at like 50 mph...i didnt even hear the tires screech...very impressive...
about the lying thing... i was just assuming... its not about backing the car, its about "ego" ...thats maybe why i thought he might have over/under estimated the distance... its not a big deal he may have been right i dont know... it was fun thats all that really mattered

He mentioned shifting in the original thread, so its the high output motor.

LOL the redline and the no torque until 6k sounds alot like an S2000. Hmm speaking of that I need to see if my boss wants to race me (he has a S2000).
You should have seen the race with my Trans Am and his car, not pretty.
