haha.. maybe we all can run at the same time.. i want some of mat aswell. yea. i'm in SC chillin with the fam. will be back on the 11th
Evo X's are nothing impressive from a roll. Not at all. I know it still feels good to beat a car that costs so much more than yours though. I expected to get walked when I ran one, and when the opposite happened, we had to do it again just to make sure I wasn't dreaming.
Right after I bought my car I was at the track and one of the new Evo X showed up, also with his temporary registration in the window. I watched a few of his runs later in the day and while California Speedway doesn't have the best traction and therefore favors the AWD car from a launch (he seemed to be running a few tenths to a half second faster) my trap speed was 4-5 mph higher in the mid-90°heat. Going by track numbers at the same day, same track, same conditions that backs up pretty well the general consensus that drivetrain losses and weight are significant on that car and if on the move and the Evo driver doesn't have an advantage from a dead stop, the new Cobalt will more than hold it's own (comparing two bone stock cars). Highway pulls may be nice (not really and can be dangerous) for bragging rights but time slips generally tell the real differences as you can rule out driver error easier by watching trap speeds going down the track at the different points.
The same Evo was at the following track days and I caught the owner talking about his car and got to look under the hood. Since the first track day he had done some exhaust upgrades and boost/fueling changes. The E.T.s dropped even further and on that day he was running about 4 mph faster than me. They may be heavy cars, some may consider them overpriced, but they are plenty capable and if you're following the World Engine architecture used in the new Evo and Caliber SRT-4 you'll see they're putty down some very nice power for not a ton of money.

Do you mean they aren't meant for straight line speed? They are definitely designed for ***** out speed in the turns.
yea the awd system isn't part of the car. Just like the rwd is what makes a corvette fast. If it was fwd with no lsd and no tires it wouldn't be fast.
I gues bilstein's, brembos and eibachs have nothing to do with the handling of the evo.

Right, I just wanted to clarify.

CAKEEATER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Logic is pretty easy to understand.
Point was that too many people use AWD to make up for lack of skill.

I am sure they do but I just hate it when people confuse true handling and AWD. Just like the new GTR the AWD is one of the main reasons it is even competitive against higher horsepower cars on the road course.

There's more to handling than just the drive train layout though. An AWD car with garbage suspension is going to do just what a FWD car does in the corners, under steer with vengeance. So then any advantage in traction that AWD has given you is effectively neutralized. I know you hate AWD, but it's here and it's a good drive train layout.
Well it's just that most AWD cars today are what they are because of the AWD. I don't hate AWD but some of the people that own them get a little annoying, then again I guess all cars have owners like that.
Edit: Alot of the cars in question are legendary for both their drive train layouts and their power plants. There's no single aspect that is solely responsible for making say an Evo or Corvette what it is. They got their names by being the real deal.
I would agree that the AWD tuner cars made their names because of their drive train. I would also argue that alot of GM cars got their name from awesome LSx series engines, I wouldn't talk down a car because it has an LSx, just like I wouldn't look down on a car for having AWD. Yep, every car manufacturer has customers that are complete douche bags, **** happens.

I bet you thought I was going to go on about AWD sucking and so on didn't you? I am all for cool cars with different drivetrain layouts it makes things fun. What I was getting at is a select group of people that own AWD cars think they have the bees knees, kind of like the select group here with GTO's.
Case in point the local old guy with the EVO X I have brought up here before. He will pick on cars that are much faster than his out launch them then hit the brakes before they freight train by and call it a win. Then he gets 7-8 cars put on him by the same car from a roll and he crys about it.
