Was this guy really racing??

OK, so I'm driving home from work the other night and pull up to a stoplight. Next to me is a late 90's Mustang V6 dropped, 18's, and tinted windows all the way around. Not a bad looking car actually. Anyways, I'm sitting there and all of a sudden I hear him rev his stock V6. I decide that since I haven't raced anyone yet with the LS I would give it a go and see what the 2.2 could do. Light turns green and we both hammer down. He had a better jump but, once the LS hit about 3500 RPM's I pulled on him and kept going. I hit about 75mph before I let off and he was a good 5 car lengths back. Oh yeah, and I do have the Injen intake on now. Now my question is: Are the V6 Mustangs that slow or was this guy just not racing?

they are slow but he wasnt racing.... i think that it is possible to beat one if their a bad drive and your a good one, but not by car lengths.

Doesn't sound like he was racing, like CobaltBurst said it's possible to beat one, but not by 5 car lengths.

If it was a '98 and older with an auto tranny, then it's possible he was racing. But he may have shut down early cuz 5 lengths is an aweful lot.

V6 Mustang's are DOGS when it comes to racing from a roll, heck even from a stop. Whenever I was waiting for my SS to arrive the dealership had given me an LS model to drive. I raced a friend of mine with a V6 Mustang, I beat him off the line (automatic) but he caught up around 60mph. It was pretty sad. I think they only come 155HP from the factory.... and GM has 2.2L 4 CYLINDER Ecotec pusing only ten less then that. How sad, lol....
If he had an automatic, its VERY possible he was racing. Their first gear ends at 40mph, and second ends at 80mph. So they're even slower in that gap.

he was probobly racing ...that gen mustang is notoriously gutless ...add you dont know the condition of the car, if it was auto, the added weight of 18's and any other variables you wnat to throw in. yu cant say for sure it it was 5 cars it could have been 4 does that mean he was racing ... there are way too many variables that we can all speculate on but chances are he was racing ... if he was only 5 cars behind you when you were racing, thats not a casual drive for anyone

'94-'98 V6 stangs had 145hp..'99-'04 had 190hp..the latter V6's were decently quick with a 5-speed.

True. There are a lot of big variables here. 94-98 makes a HUGE difference because of the 40-45hp difference as well as the gearing difference. Also, auto vs. manual makes a huge difference, say, ~.5 seconds in the 1/4. Basically you could have raced a 99+ Manual that would be capable of low 15's with good driver and conditions, or you could have raced a '98 Auto that would be happy with low 17's.

Did it look like this (94-98)....

...or like this (99+)...

Looking at the pics, it was definitely the 94-98 mustang.

ive raced my friends 2002 mustang and we both have 5spd. my ls has won 3 out of the 4 times, the last time i got a terrible jump. he also has cat-back magnaflow. so he is pretty close to 200...but my ls can stay with him pretty good. we have never raced past around 70 mph...so i could not tell you what would happen after that.

He's likely not a great driver... or maybe you are a better driver. A 99+ V6 Manual should be a close run with a 2.4SS, and have a few tenths at least on an equally driven LS.

very true. i used to own a '00 v6 stang 5-speed. they can be decently quick with a good set of aftermarket rims/tires.

The V6 are very slow stock... I beat one in my integra that was running 16.8(btw this was at the track) lmao.. But let the breathe better and they are almost as fast as a stock gt.
