here it is..... 2.2 > 2.4 ! (with video)
I have driven both a couple times when waiting for my car to be serviced. I was expecting more from the 2.4. I also has a 2.2L try run me from a roll on the highway.... I let him honk three times and drive off..
Ok you guys were right, the ss IS an automatic., and i AM a five speed. The only "perfomance" mods ive done to it are an intake, header, and a catback.
I'm sure that if i raced a 2.4 5 speed he would have beaten me.

Now just for clarification, because I don't want to upset any supercharge owners. The guy with the ss s/c did run a faster time then I did I just killed him on the tree and 60 ft(r/t is one of the few race advantages of being an auto). **** he actually trapped ten mph faster than I did. But his sixty was horrible.
on test and tune track nites R/T is nothing.
just because you hit the traps first doesnt constitute beating the car in the other lane.
Ive often ignored the tree to take away the jitters at the line and concentrate on a clean launch.
When I had my 2001 Z24 I played with a few SS 2.4's and was really surprised that I usually ended up pulling on them.
After driving a couple one auto and one M5 I think it's the VVT that makes them slow. It seems to start working late and doesn't do enough when it is working.
If it was a non-VVT and made 170hp it would be alot quicker.

yeah stock vs stock u can tell a difference. i had a 2.2 then someone drove 70mph into me and totalled in..a few days later im in a 2.4..i cud tell the differnece. better suspension, exhaust, more powerful..but a modded 2.2 can keep up with a stock 2.4 as show in this video..now a modded 2.4 vs modded 2.2 thats a different story.
The title is a bit misleading (ok alot as its too vage) but i'm not suprised that a a moded 5-speed ls w/ your mods can beat a stock 2.4 auto, granted it was only by a bumper.
Yeah the tuning from the factory sucks alot of low end grunt out of the 2.4. They seem to have a dip in power around 3-4k (due to power enrichment not vvt) and then it starts climbing back up, tuning solves this.

driving all trims of cobalts i have to agree, the 2.4 isnt much faster then the 2.2. IT IS FASTER stock vs stock no questions theres and no one can argue that one..but there isnt a huge amount of difference like the differences in the 2.4 vs 2.0. the 2.4 i would say has WAY more potental then the 2.2 but to each his own..
True, but a few mods will put a 2.4 into stock 2.0 territory. Me and NamedGobalt recently hit up an 1/8 track. It was his first time drag racing on a track ever, and was my first time ever racing the Cobalt. He's entirely stock, neither of us did a burnout, it was a cooooold day and a coooold track, no burnout, and I had my 19"s on, and we both managed to squeeze out a 9.7 with terrible launches, lol. I think both cars could have been faster too with some practice, and if I wasn't racing on the dubs, haha.
By few mods do you mean everything available, short of a turbo it won't happen.
Everything available.......no. I have an AEM CAI, CA header, CA/XTC 2.5" de-cat downpipe, ARK N2 cat-back and an Ingalls ETD. Thats hardly "everything" I can get. I still need a tune, still need to install my SS/SC injectors, I could cam it with the JBP tri-flows, etc etc.
the 2.4 auto is a quick car if you leave it in low for first and 2nd, then shift to I. You have no way to disable the traction control other than shifting into low. The traction control is standard on the 2.4 and it does not use abs to control wheel spin, it detects throttle input and retards the engine. In effect it strangles the engine, sad part is it does not take actual wheel spin into account, just the potential. The only thing it does different when it detects wheel spin is illuminate the low traction on the info center. I have a 2.4 and I know, I can spin the crap out of the tires when traction is limited, and you feel 0 difference. The Lexus on the other hand does absolutely nothing UNTIL it detects wheel spin and then you can feel the retardation in the engine and you hear the ABS motor working, and the tires stop spinning, oh and she is quick to react, you might get a half or one revolution of the tire before it is correcting. I have no doubt that a manual 2.2 can beat a 2.4 auto (be it slightly) if the 2.4 is left in Drive. I have no difficulty here keeping up with the SC guys, anything other than from a stop I'm within a car length. (that or they don't want to leave me....hmmmm?)
good race, but like people are saying, it depends on the driver. like the other night i raced my friends 02 jetta gli vr6 24 valve from a dig and raped him by 3 cars. the retard sucks at driving.
but it was good to make him feel like **** after bragging about his vw all the time.

Why are u guys debating which car is better, We all know the 2.4 is a better car. it comes with way more options, and has more potential. It comes stock with like 25 more horses, and is using the same super restrictive parts. A stock 2.4 will beat a stock 2.2, a modded 2.4 will beat an equally modded 2.2. If i could afford a 2.4 i would have bought one, if not for the engine, for the interior and Facias. I have a slightly modded 2.2, and when i raced a new 08 cobalt SPORT, 2.4. i beat it, it was obliously stock, and i knew from the start i was probably going to win, also because the driver looked like a ********. But all in all, everyone should just be happy with what you have, and make it as best as you can. Sorry about my rant, i just felt like typing.
