My '10 Cobalt SS vs '10 Camaro SS

I had a little encounter with a '10 Camaro SS tonight on my way home! We went for a short burst on Sample Rd., but came up on traffic. There was no clear winner on this run. He then proceeded to speed up, nothing crazy or anything, as if to get away from me or something. Anyways, I took pursuit and he ended up turning onto Powerline Rd. and that is where the definitive run took place! As he finished his turn onto Powerline Rd., he hit it. I matched his move and began spinning like mad all the way through 2nd gear. I was staying right where I started initially due to my traction issues that I'm sure many of you are aware of. LOL! However, once I got into third, I gained traction and started a strong and steady pull up to about 100 mph or so, at which point I was more or less about 2, maybe 3 cars ahead. Afterwards, I slowed back down to legal limits and was trying to get his attention to give him the thumbs up for a good, fun run. He wouldn't look over. I don't know why. It's all in fun, bro! It was fun for me atleast and it was my only decent race thus far. I think that I'm going to invest in some good tires that have some traction because I'm sick of blowing them off everytime I drop the hammer in 2nd gear. I just thought I'd share my encounter with you guys. I hope you enjoyed it! Take care.

I live near 441 and Sample Rd. in Coconut Creek. The meet sounds good. I'll definitely have to check that out one weekend. I don't see too many Cobalt SS running around in my area.

Don't worry, bro! A bolt-on SS/TC would not give you much of a fight, seeing that you have a bolt-on Cobra. I am coming from an '04 Cobra myself and it was modded with the usual: 2.93" upper pulley, 4# lower pulley, catback exhaust, intake and a tune. My best time was 11.46 @ 119.7 mph on a 1.58 60' time with that set-up. I always ran the Hoosier DOT drag radials in 335 width. They were steamrollers! From a roll-on, my Cobra would definitely murder my SS/TC and it would be a complete assraping from a dig! LOL! Trust me, I've owned and driven both.

I ran a '10 Camaro SS with the 23psi trifecta, dp, charge piping, etc. and had about the same results... he jumped me through 2nd, I soon pulled back even and then started to pull on him... the guy was cool about it and said he was embarrassed to lose to a Cobalt, I told him "don't worry, if I was stock you'd kill me"...

as far as a bolt-on Cobra, it'd be absolutely ridiculously bad and a waste of gas for the Cobra... we'd do good to hang with a stock Cobra

Rain and DR don't mix. I keep them on separate rims and mount them for street outings!

It sounds like it was an auto you ran. If you say you would be lucky to hang with a stock Cobra but can pull a couple cars on a new Camaro SS, the manual SS's are just as fast as the Cobras stock (mid 12's at around 112).

sounds like the Camaro SS driver was trying to get away from you cause he thought you were trying to kill him and rape his wife and children.

no it was a manual I ran(I stopped and talked to him, he even offered to let me drive it) and where did I say I put a couple of cars on him? he jumped me off the start and I reeled him in and started to pull....meaning, he wasn't gaining ground... even then when we shut down I had MAYBE 3/4ths of a car on him, it was a very close race

true well driven M6s Camaros CAN run mid-12s... but MOST of them run high 12s/low 13s... which is about on par with a tuned/bolt-on LNF, especially in a race from a roll, but considering we trap 2-3mph faster, going to give us the edge in a run for a roll as that is where traps speeds mean a lot... on the street from a stop, I probably would have saw tail lights

like stock Cobras, i've seen them run 12.4s stock, i've also seen them not break 12s stock

and 9 times out of 10 a stock Cobra is going to walk a stock LS3 Camaro, and i'm a GM fanboy

now stock GT500(especially one of the 1st ones), they'd be a good race stock for stock with a well driven LS3 Camaro... I don't know how well the new ones with the power increase run though, I do know that my car will hang with a stock '07 GT500 from a roll and honestly, the one I raced, I'd beat from a dig, because the guy who owns it can't launch for **** and only races from a roll, lol

but he is pretty good at racing from a roll, because he has so much practice, lol

from what i've seen a stock terminator Cobra is faster than a stock GT500(like I said haven't seen a new one run).... even being down in power... which ****, the stock terminators were severely underrated from the factory, they were "rated" at 390hp and put that to the freaking wheels on a dyno stock... and of course, bolt-ons, a pulley swap, and a tune later you had 440whp

and as a GM fanboy I can assure you had my insurance quote NOT been $350/month for one, I wouldn't have ever bought this car

^ Good post...

I would say it is more 6 out of 10 times the Cobra will walk the Camaro, but they are just too close in terms of times and traps.

One thing I will disagree with is the GT500 being slower then a Termi Cobra, that just isn't true. You may have seen a few badly driven ones show poor times but the times you see for the GT500 are in the low 12's around 115+ well driven. It weighs a couple hundred pounds more and has another 50-70 whp (avg dyno 440-460 where the termi does 370-390), it is faster trust me. Go check SVTPerformance.com if you think otherwise...

Stock Termi is a drivers race with a manual Camaro, a GT500 is on average faster then them all but are close enough to where a good driver in the Termi or Maro can hang for a while with a GT500 until higher speeds where pure power and less driving matter.

I do think you have one of the higher trapping TC's right? So you would be above the norm of bolt on TC owners too BTW.

I do agree if insurance on those cars were cheaper they would be in many more hands of younger people. I would be in a Cobalt SS if I couldn't afford the GTO, which surprisingly my rate is $80 a month full coverage if anyone is wondering.

$350 a month ouch, do you live in a bad area or something there or a flood zone? Another reason the GTO is nice in terms of a sleeper, no classified as a muscle car! I bet a 02 Camaro would have been much higher insurance wise then my new Goat...

no insurance quotes were just ridiculously high for that car... I could have gotten a C5 zo6 for less money

by the way, my Cobalt is only $85/month w/ $250 deductible and i'm single

^ I have heard Vettes are less then Camaro's/Mustangs insurance wise, something about the age of owners or something.

they are but even like a LS2 GTO, less than $200 a month... the most expensive cars i got a quote on was the terminator Cobra, next in line was a Mitsubishi Evo

and I have a clean record, no wrecks, no tickets

I got a quote on a 05 vette last year. Granted it was 3 years older than the balt. But it was cheaper to insure
