SS/SC vs 99 Z28 LS1

Well I know I'll get flamed for this but I have no reason to lie. I'm 34 and Really enjoy my cobalt. Well my friend came over today and he has a bone stock 99 Z28 auto with 2:73 gears. Well he let me drive it and I told him I think my cobalt will keep up with him just to mess with him and he said lets go. I really didn't think I could. Well we went out and lined them up about 25 and let it rip all the way up to 115 and we were side by side. We did it three times same result each time except for the last time when I missed third. My mods are in sig. Anyway I was very surprised at the results. I thought he would've pull on me above 80 because his gears are so tall. I think his gears really kill the cars performance because it doesn't stay in the power band. Just my observation.

No it's stock with 2:73 gears. They did come with those gears in them if you didn't get the performance gearing which would be 3:23s with an auto. Stick cars have 3:42s. When I bought my 95 ta it came with 3:23s. I had the performance gearing package. Needless to say I was very impressed with my cobalt. So was my friend.

Well I wouldn't let anybody drive my ta but I doubt my cobalt will keep up with it. It runs low 12s all motor @ 110/111. On the nitrous it runs low 11s @ my best of 121 with a 100 shot. Plus with my MT drag radials the ta is a monster out of the hole. My best 60' is 1.57.Thanks

good job! yea me and one of my buddys messed around on beltway8
he has 2001 trans am stock versus my 2005 cobalt ss sc i have cut out box with KN
filter, poly trans mount, cat back 2"5 to flowmaster.i was coming from work and this trans am passes me up quick so i take off after him he slows down and i pass him up so
i pull to the light behind a car and the ta pulls right behind me.the light turns green the takes a right and the cars gets out the way i neel my car at the same the ta does to and he right behind me we go threw traffic, then it clears up and the ta goes to the right lane to try to pass me and up to 120 he was up to my rear bumper. i shuted it down then he comes passing me up and the next light came up he was taking a right and he gave me a thumbs up and said its pretty quick little car i said "yea its alright its not fast yet " i was a
happy camper after that.

Wow, You guys must have run into some factory flop LS1's.

Given my LS1's were both Camaro SS's that doesn't affect much. My Cobalt SS wouldn't stand a chance against either of them from a dig or roll. My Auto LS1 ran 13.3 @ 105 and my M6 ran 12.98 @ 108 when both were bone stock.

Z28/Formula Auto had 2.73 standard and 3.23 were optional
Z28/Formula M6 had 3.23 standard 3.42 were optional

SS/WS6 Auto were 3.23 and M6 were 3.42

There is quite a difference 2.73 vs 3.23 but not enough to make one run 14's. My 1996 Firbirs Formula had 2.73's and shifted out of second a 99mph. It was cool but it left alot of dead space from a roll.

well if you want to call it like that i guess they were a flop, but still a ls1.i've raced alot of v-8 cars and the only one that got me a run was a mustang bullit he had complete
exhaust, computer tunning, cold air intake, headers.we went from a 40 roll to 100 and i was about 2 ft from his rear bumper i think that was pretty good considering 305+hp vrs 205hp.when it was over i pulled up beside him and gave me a thumbs up.

Correct.

Incorrect. The 3.23 gears were never standard for M6, ALL LS1 F-Body M6 only came with 3.42 gears.
SS/WS6 Auto were 3.23...
Correct

I raced a 95 lt1 Z28 auto. Not sure what gears it has but they were the stock ones. Anyways he had 1 passenger, and i didnt, but he had flowmasters with no cats, and K&N CAI, and i was bone stock. We went from 40 to 140, and it was dead even race.

Oh yeah. i also raced a ls1. My good friend has a 04 GTO 6sp. He has long tube headers, high flow cat, stock mufflers, 80mm TB, and a short throw shifter. We raced at the drag strip(1/8 mile). I was bone stock at the time. His best was a 9.01 and mine was a 9.34. I was very happy. But i know that if it would have been a 1/4 mile, it wouldnt have been that close. Those gto's have major traction proplems. The independent rear supension really kills them off the line.

I do agree that IRS isn't a good setup for the 1/4 mile track. However, it isn't too hard to cut 1.9xx 60' time and a great driver could cut 1.8. I'm not the greatest driver, just above average but I could consistantly cut 1.9xx with my car which also has IRS.

But, how wide are your tires and how much power are you making?

You are right, tires and HP/TQ does make difference. My tires are bit wider than the '04 GTOs (stock wise), and I do pack bit more HP/TQ. Having said that, on GTO forums, there are guys who are cutting 1.9xx 60' time with their bone stock M6 LS1 GTOs so it is doable.

True they CAN hook its just not the easiest thing in the world for them. 1.9s honestly aren't that spectacular. What kind of 60's are the fast(11s and faster) GTOs running?

With small street tires and combine it with IRS and I would say 1.9xx 60' is pretty damn good to me.

Since 99% of the GTOs hitting 11s are running DRs or ETs, they are in 1.6 - 1.7 range, with some in 1.5.
