SS/SC Vs. Srt-4

Coming home about 15 minutes before this thread was writen, I was behind a White Srt that happend to be leaving the same gated housing community that my friend's parents live in. We both happend to be turning left which made me think, "Oh yeah, this is on as soon as I get around this truck ahead of me". The Skittle makes his turn when the light go's green and I do a little shimmy around the truck to put the Skittle directly to my left. By the time I caught up to him we were both doing just a shade over 60, so this puts me in the very bottom of 3rd gear...not my cars strongest point.

So I creep passed him a bit trying to bait him and then he creeps back up on me. We jog back and forth a bit untill I just give the throttle two hard taps, this is all he needed I guess, because he just up and shot off like a mad hair. I follow in his pursuit and stop his pull for a moment, then I'm guessing he got through and turbo lag he was having and just starting running away and now I'm thinking "****, I've found myself a modded Srt and this is going to be over quick." But to my surprise, once he was out about a car ahead his pull completely haulted and now I'm gaining at about the pace that he was pulling on me. This is because he ran out of gear a bit quicker than I did and I still had a good amount of 3rd to use up.

By the time I pulled even with him I flicked the tranny into 4th and we just stood there even with eachother, moving back and forth a foot or two, but niether one gaining any real ground on the other. Then he started to fall back and didn't stop untill he was almost at my rear bumper, this caused me to think he was done with the run as we were only a qaurter mile from the next intersection and were doing well over 100 mph. So I let off the throttle for about 3 seconds, thinking it was over. Well, I was wrong and he was still at it. He pulled a nose on me before I could do anything about it, but he didn't get any further than that.

Once again I pulled him in and this time I put his nose at about my trunk and there he stayed untill I realized it was really time to shut down this race. That intersection came up real fast and was now a little less than a block away, so I hammered the breaks at about 125 and he shot passed me like I was standing still. We both took a right turn at the light and as he pulled into his neighboorhood I flash my high beams and gave him a wave as I drove by, I dunno if he noticed or not, but oh well.

I'm guessing this Srt was bone stock and the cause of his immidiate pull was the nasty tq those turbos produce. I'm sure he'll also be checking for boost leaks and trying to get rid of any boost creep he may have as well. I'm betting he didn't expect that outcome...I know I didn't.

It's just kind of odd. Everyone on SRTforums talk about killing Cobalts stock or modded, and on here stock Cobalts are walking stock SRTs. I dont call BS, i just think its odd.

More people need to carry video cameras. I always love a good video.

I agree with you. Its odd how this always seems to happen. Its common knowledge that the srt's are supposed to be faster but then I raced a stock one stock and walked away. Why? How?

You would probably know better than me, but didn't the first year have a lil less power or something than the newer srt's? Maybe that what He and I raced?

Or maybe there is something to the cobalts having to be broken in before they hit full boost? I just don't know.

Anyway, good run to the thread starter. Just be careful.

Stock for stock, the cars put out almost identical numbers. Throw in the wide variety of drivers out there of all skill levels, and there you have it. Besides, how many SS/SC and SRT owners would post about loss to the other? Unless it was an epic battle for the ages, I'm certain the vast majority of races are only mentioned by the winner. After all, history is written by the winner.

GM has over-rated their cobalts....I thought they had more ***** stock, but mmeeehhh

The thing is that modding horsepower/ $ is cheaper.......for example...you can SAFELY make substantial whp/trq gains just from getting a s1 pcm (3oo $cdn)....this allows gives your car a boost gain of 3, instantly..from 12 stock to 15......and this is where it all starts.....approx .5 E.T

I believe a pully mod is your biggest whp/trq gainer, hp/$
and that still is not allowing you to shave .5 off your E/T

you definately got the srt beat with the interior.....that alone ALMOST made me purchase one instead.....lmao

cobalt>srt....bone stock hands down

LOL I just lost to a stock srt4 with my mods..... but I think i'm running either too rich or too lean....better be rich because I have high settings on my maf translator to be safe since I don't have my wideband gauge on yet.

Yah i raced my stage 3 Cobalt SS/SC against a srt-4 w/intake and it was pretty much even. We raced 2 times each from a dig and we each won 1 race a piece. I'm not the greatest driver in the world, i would know i lost to an 06 Civic Si cause i missed 2nd gear, but I am getting better. Nice kill.

A good video of a race is sort of hard to capture while moving at 100+ mph...wouldnt you say?

Turbochargers make high end horsepower. Superchargers make low end torque.

HP sells cars... torque wins races...

I honestly Love srt-4's. Way i see it i have "friendly" grudges with them cause we're both FI domestic cars and know we're competing in a "import exclusive" scene so we need to stick together. I have a lot of respect for the srt-4 and would NEVER call it a neon

Actually, both have types are are capable of low end or high end power. The SRT4 stock hits peak torque at 2200 rpm...that seems pretty low end to me.

Yeah i'm honest on the forums. I admit, stock for stock i lost to an srt4 acr. My friends. Everytime, by one carlength from 35 to about 120. It's all good. I wanted an srt4 but got a way better deal on the cobalt, probably one of the best deals that anyone got on this site. But now i'm kinda regretting not getting the srt4

I may actually be sellling the SS soon to get a used Srt4 with around 20,000-25,000 miles on it for like $17k. I don't know how much I could get for my car though since it has been in an accident (stupid me) probably like $12k

Fair warning from a SRT owner to a future owner... Dont buy a modded SRT...its like trying on a used condom...lol

Seriously that is just various signs that it has been abused. And if you need to know what to look for let me know

I too almost bought a neon, but they discontinued them in 05 and I wanted a "new" car... so the decision was made.. but I know of some scary fast ones (srt's) out there that I know better than to run (475-830hp) yes thats right 833 hp .... ****** mopar.

[QUOTE=Apex]HP sells cars... torque wins races...

From a dig, in a FWD car, torque loses races. That's why both cars 60' times suck hard. So much power, but the traction is terrible.

From a roll on, in a FWD car, massive torque will indeed help win the race. But without horsepower, torque is just a feeling you get. With the equivalent amount in horsepower, the two together can be ball busting. A fast car will have a precise balance of both power and torque.

Fast cars can also have very little torque, and loads of horsepower, just not very good on the street.
