I've raced an '06 GTI about 5 times. Lost every time, stayed even once. This GTI is bone stock. I start pulling back on him later in third, but this won't be an "easy win" for you.
Ummm shift at redline next time ???

No, I have a 2.0. Yes I shift at redline dipshit.

I'm talking an '06 GTI here. 2.0T.

I don't care if you all beat 1.8T's or VR6's. Thats not what I'm talking about here.

I'm talking about the MK V like I assume you are ... no idea why you are not winning .. take your car in .. there around the same speed as a new SI (i'll have to doubble check that though)

To OP -> You didn't mention (unless I'm blind) wether he is getting a GTI or base Golf? I think a race with a new GTI would be pretty close. What you would call a 'driver's race'. For comparison (ugh! I hate magazine racing...but I have yet to see real #s yet) R&T got a 14.8 @94.6mph out of a stock '06 GTI w/DSG (manual's are low 15's). And with some SS/SC drivers getting mid-high 14's stock, IMO it could be closer than alot of people are saying.

Either way the new GTI is a nice car and a worthy opponent to a SS/SC. Good luck, play nice with the euro's and keep it safe!

My good buddy has an 2003 VW 1.8T its pretty even off the line but once i hit 3rd gear its an easy kill...atleast half a car or more, but now hes got the Revo Stg 2 kit , BOV, magnaflow exhaust. and kicks my ass...lol (by about the same margin) (Not for Long)

I think it would be a good race, but there is no way the GTI 2.0T should actually beat the cobalt. They make VWs so beastly, even though its a golf, they say it weighs over 3150 pounds. Thats why the R32 can just barely pass us buy, its around 3500 (for a sport compact) rediculous!

my 2000 vr6 jetta GLX even weighs about that much as the new golf and has a catback, cai, stge 2 clutch, lightened flywheel and my cobalt still can just walks away from it.

I would say your gona win either way, but the magnaflow wont make much of a difference. 7whp at the most. if you get a 3inch pulley your gona smoke him for sure. and you can pick a pulley for less than 150dlls and install for about 100 and have 15whp more. Also the magnaflow is gona run you around 470 at the cheapest place. MP.com

You should be able to smoke him no problem. Just make sure you work on your launch, and youll destroy him. Not only that, but they only top out @ 130mph anywayz. As long as the stretch is long enough, youll win for sure

Coming from a neutral party (don't own either of the cars in question), the Cobalt SS/SC should beat stock Golf, whether old or new, unless it's a R32. If you're losing to stock Golf's, you're being outdriven.

The new GTI's are slow as hell for a turbo 200 horses. The 0-60mph is only about 7.1sec according to the VW site. Not only that but it weighs 3300 lbs for a manual tranny! Automatics weigh even more! Thats a fatty compact car. Ours only weigh 2900 lbs., thats a 400 lb difference! You will smoke the new GTI. If its a stock R32, itll be a tight race. If its an R32 thats modded, you will probably lose, unless youre better at launching than he is. Then u might stand a chance.

i almost traded in my Cobalt for a new 2.0 gti... with a chip... it will smoke a SS drive one first. to beat your enemy... you must first know it. go drive one. i will say its a bast. but overall... its not the race that counts its the warranty... (if you know VW warranties... you will get this joke.)

The key phrase here is "with a chip." The 1.8T's and 2.0T's are nothing to write home about stock, but I think everyone's in agreement that they pick up some serious power from minimal mods... like a chip.
