Go Thinner or Shorter?
Go Thinner or Shorter?
Ok, simple problem, just want some input/suggestions on my simple solution/s
Tried postin this in another thread but i guess the thread was dead (no i aint dr seuss)
Got MSR 045 18x8s, 235/40/18 nitto nt05s rear tires rub fender lip when goin 50-60 and hittin bumpage. It rubs right between sidewall ending and tread startin. This is why i need to do something.
Do i go 225/40/18 in rear, 235/35/18 in rear, change rear springs only?
new pair of 225/40/18 in nittos i bin able to find run 288
stock ss/tc rear springs 100
Ksport 1.3" drop springs in rear 130
I think the 225s might work but not sure

The rear fenders are rolled from the factory. Put a 1/4"-1/2" shim under the rear springs to raise the rear ride height slightly. I made some out of 5/8" PVC because I have about 150lbs of stereo gear in the trunk. I glued the piece that I cut out of the middle using a hole saw into the plastic bump stop base to prevent it from getting crushed. The ones in the pics are actually 3/4", but they were a bit much, so I dropped to 5/8". I have Progress springs.
Here are some pics:

This is how it sits on Progress springs with a 5/8" shim. My tires are 235/35/19 Nitto Invo's.

Thats a really good idea, Yeah i got about 80lbs in back, i think ill try that so 5/8" PVC with the center drilled out. And that holds up alright? how long have you run this setup? You should make a how to sir.
:
Baseball bat between the tire and the wheelwell lip. That is how it can be done easily and without any fancy equipment. Roll car slowly foward and put easy and uniform downward pressure on the the bat. That is how the GTO guys do it.
yeah i def really dont want to try, any body work i give up let the pros do that. All the mechanics are usually relatively simple minding you gotta be mech inclined but i think ill try bumpin balts idea and see wut results it give me first. I dunno bout the PVC but if it holds, its a cheap fix to a common Wider Tire/rim combo that rubs.
A Baseball bat?...wth well i guess if it works for them..but that cant guarantee itll be an even roll.

I work with the PVC on a daily basis at work. It's intended to be a wood substitute for outdoor use. It will not ride or degrade. It will outlast your Cobalt, I guarantee it! lol. I have lots of scraps around the shop. If you want a set, I can make you some. All I need is enough $$$ to cover shipping costs. How low do you sit in the rear? Are you sure 5/8" isn't too much? I may actually go down to 1/2". PM me in case I forget to check this thread again.
you mean these guys..haha

This is pretty kewl, but yeah, i think the weight in the trunk is the prob im having so spacer might work better. Still
Yeah same here, well im more into working with PVC pipe but, i guess ive seen what can happen under stress loads and cold can do to like sch 40 but usually sch 80 is pretty durable. Then again it is pipe not solid chunks of it
and its only a spacer.
I got sportlines so 2 front 2.5 rear i guess. When my subs are in i can barely get my finger between the tire and fender. So they out until i fix the problem. More i think of it i may have to do both spacers and roll but ill see.

5/8" will probably be good for you then. If the tires are BARELY rubbing, you could get away with 1/2". I have 1/2", 5/8", and 3/4" material and I can also thickness plane a custom thickness if you want. This PVC is somewhat soft and flexible. It's not rock hard and brittle like PVC pipe.
yep those guys.
