Retaining Clips Cause Balancing Issue?
Retaining Clips Cause Balancing Issue?
Heres the deal. I was talking to someone on the yourcobalt website about having some vibration issues now with my aftermarket rims that are 2" bigger than stock. I get vibrations around 55mph in the steering wheel and in the brake pedal when braking hard. This guy tells me that its the retaining clips on the rotor. At first i had no idea what he was talking about but then just read a how to on changing the axels and saw what he was talking about. It seems there are retaining nuts on lug studs that hold the rotor in place. He seems to think that this is causing the problem and that I should remove them. I sure its not going to hurt anything by removing them but Im just currious to hear everyone elses opinions on the situation. Personally I think its caused by not having hubrings installed and poor balancing at the tire place.
THat is exactly the problem, I went through the same problems when I put on my new wheels and tires. I took them off and it fixed everything. Go for it, and the only reason they have those clips on is for production purposes, so nothing wrong with taking them off
Thanks guys. Like i said i have never seen these things before and it does make sense. I'll take them off sometime this week and hopefully get the hub rings in the mail as well. With the two changes hopefully everything will correct itself.
I just got my hub rings in yesterday from justforwheels.com I just have to get some time to put them on. More than likely I will be doing it this weekend along with redoing my niteshade on the rear because it has faded over time.
Just did the work today and everything is perfect again. I think the main problem was the reas driverside wheel. A shoe was rubbing against the drum in one small area and i took it apart and cleaned the brake dust out and put it all back together and it still did it. However as soon as i bolted the tire on with the hub ring in place and spun it the rubbing was eliminated. I would say the rings were the problem.
FYI for all of those who are going to take of the retainers the easiest way i found was to use a small screwdriver and pry part of it off of the rotor. Then use some wire cutters and cut a slit all the way thru the reatiner. Then use pliers and pull the entire retainer off.
Last but not least if anyone wants to know where I got my rings I got them from justforwheels.com
