Rims and pressure sensors
Rims and pressure sensors
Hi guys,
I'm now aware that our cars (I have not received my 09 yet) have a tire pressure monitoring system. What happens if we take the stock rims off, and put on rims that don't have support for the TPMS system - will there be a light on the dash, or a horribly beeping sound? I want rims for the winter, but can't find reasonable ones that support TPMS.
Thanks, Mal.

The car won't start up & onstar will lock you in your car till the tow truck comes & brings it to the dealership. Then the dealer put you on a list.
NO
this has been posted many times. I guess a light on the dash comes up.

it's took me 30 sec in the 1st page in TIRE forum

Actually Mr Boston Sir, that already read that thread, and noticed that the first user stated a chime, and the other guy stated just a light, so the information was conflicting, which is why I asked here.
Furthermore this is a question that pertains to the latest TC version of the cobalt, because that's the version I'm buying -> nearly all other threads in that channel/forum pertain to the SC version, and who knows if they've changed the chime/light policy since that model was introduced.
Mal.
I'm not changing the rims, I'm buying an extra set. That would mean that I would have to buy 4 new sensors at $100 (cdn) each.

Thanks for the info. The guy at the tire store was showing me a special rim that had a groove in it that would fit the sensor. Do I really need special rims to accommodate these things? Now we're getting into a subject that should be in the other forum, but really, we're almost done here, so lets close this out.
Thanks, Mal.

what rimms are you looking at? These brakes are big & are tough to get rims on them, What I see on here not even the ss/sc rims don't fit & this is the same car. Just this new one has huge front brakes. They even say the spare tire won't fit up front, now thats fucked to me.
I was not flaming you, I just don't relize I am a smart ass. SORRY
Like the other guy said I think ur fine with the 40's not the 35's. These new TPS are small.

It is weird that the spare won't fit, but I guess that makes sense since you're not supposed to use a smaller wheel with a LSD anyhow.
I wonder how the sensor is attached to the rubber/wheel to stop it from clanking around?
Mal.
It was some rim I'd never heard of, but probably some ASA or Borbet rims from tire rack (I'm in Canada, but I'll be in the states in September and can pick them up). Just spare rims for the winter. I'll get 18" so there should not be a fitment problem I don't think. I have to do some research to find the necessary bolt pattern and offset first of course (since I just asked the guy what would fit, he did that for me).

Lsd has notthing to do with the spare not fitting. The front rotor are like 12.5".
This is for the new 08/09 model ss/tc's
no one has found rims for the ss/tc car yet, but there will be a frist.
Malachii, mine isn't a TC, but to answer your original question, when you get in and start it up, you get a chime that is a few dings more than normal. I'm using my stock headunit feeding an amplified sound system, so yah it's pretty loud for me. The light comes on in the instrument panel and stays on until you turn the key off. I was concerned it would change some tuning parameters after reading some corvette threads, but nothing out of the ordinary has changed with this car. That does make me wonder for a moment if there might be a "de-tune" result with the TC since it is a "performance vehicle" like the corvette guys say their cars do when the TPMS is in malfuction mode. Probably not though.
BostonBoy - well it's a two part things. Nobody has found a 17" rim that will fit the TC car, but I think an 18" will fit. With regards to the LSD - even if you could fit the spare on the front, they would tell you not to, like they did in my Nissan Sentra Spec-V which had an LSD, but the spare fit anyhow on the front. The manual stated to put the spare on the rear wheels, and bring a rear wheel forwards, because the differing tire sizes in the front would damage the LSD.
BMC - Thanks for answering the question. It's a few extra dings only, which I can live with.
Anybody know how the sensors are secured using non-stock rims so they don't thrash around?
Thanks,
Mal.

the reason for not having two different sized wheels on the front is the lsd. it'll mechanically know that each side is rotating at different speeds and do its thing. i hear its not very good for it.

Funny thing I noticed today. When I flip through the readings on the dash, the RF still says 32 psi where the others are -- . The only thing I can think of is there is one of the stock wheels still in the garage and maybe when I park it in there in the evening the computer can pick it up. Weird.
