Stock 18's...Are they painted or powder coated?
I couldn't figure out whether the stock 18's on the '06 SS/SC were powder coated or painted... I've been told that they were painted and then finished with a clear coat. But yesterday I took my wheels in to get them powder coated and the guy told me he would have to charge me an extra $20 per wheel to sand blast the powder coat off. I knew that he would have to sand blast one way or another but sand blasting powder coat is a lot more labor intensive and expensive than a coat of paint. I can't believe that GM would pay that much to have all of their stock wheels powder coated, but maybe they did. Does anybody know for sure?
Thanks for the input. I could have sworn they were painted too. Everyone is right...they scratch way to easy to be powder coated. Thats the whole reason I wanted to get them powder coated...to get rid of those chips and scratches. I think that guy was trying to rip me off!
When I pick them up I'm going to tell him again that they are painted I dont wanna pay for him to "sand blast the powder coat off" I'm picking them up this weekend Ill post some pics soon

well I work for Toyota making all the rims for their Vehicles...ALL of the wheels for Toyota are powdercoated and then painted...
That would be the reason them why your wheels are chipping so easily...if the wheels aren't powdercoated first, then it's basically like taking a wheel and spraying them with spray paint.
