Hey, I was looking at the design of both the regular 2.2 and the ss s/c and was wondering if you can swap in the s/c to a regular cobalt? What would be needed most likely would be a change in tranny just in case a stock cobalt 5-speed woudlnt be strong enough(not sure if it's the same or not as the ss 5-speed), ecu in order to have the proper tune, possibly gauge cluster due to ecu swap. I don't see why it can't be done if the ecu can plug in to the stock harness, and even then you can swap the interior harness if need be. I mean the architecture of the 2.2 and 2.0 ecotecs look strikingly similar, even the block looks the same on both(dont frequent these boards so I may be wrong). A swap like this would obviously need a donor ss car, but after my 2000 audi s4 2.7t swap into a regular a4 and seeing my friend(tonio5555) with an ltz and in dire need of big mods this would be an interesting project. Who said 2-doors can have all the fun..

Assuming you have and want to spend the money on it, why not. The most difficult part would probably be the wiring harness.

An S4 motor in a A4.....that **** is nasty, there is a guy around here with a Silver S4 with a full Stage 3 and some other goodies pushing mid 500's he says!! But yea I dont see why you couldnt do a motor swap, but as far as a the LSJ S/C on the 2.2, that wont happen unless you have some time and a machine shop

 

Hmm, the wiring harness is what I figured would be the tougher part. After going through this...


idk if a cobalt should be tooooo tough. I'd have to look at the wiring diagrams between both cars. I doubt gm would've designed the wiring radically different, they might have the same harness for each car, with the wires for all the options in there(sunroof, additional airbags, etc.). I know many companies do that to save money and I doubt gm would be big ballers and waste money in times like this and especially in one of the economy models like the cobalt even though the ss is a more premium package car.

Well what if you just bought the head and s/c from the 2.0 and plopped that on the 2.2 block? They SHOULD be able to work. I wouldn't want to do too much work on the 2.2 to put a dinky s/c on it if you could just do the same amount work/money and put a nice turbo on it.

 

Yeah, I would think the wires are there, but lack the connectors.

The LSJ also has oil sprayers for the pistons and forged crank and connecting rods. The 2.2 has the spots for the sprayers, you just need the nozzles.

Some of the stuff only works for the ECOTEC Caviliers since the Cobalts have a different computer and drive-by-wire instead of the Cavi's throttle cable. The L61 PCM is currently untunable.

The LSJ ony has a forged crank and connecting rods? No pistons?

 

Why not just transfer the body of a 2.2 sedan over to the 2.0 S/C.

I think the "swap" of the SS S/C system to the 2.2 is plausible, hell I was thinking about giving it a shot, but for the money/time spent it'd make for sense to either go prefabricated turbo or s/c kit.

 

dont forget about the fuel management.. that would all need to be changed in order to support the s\c wouldnt it?

 

most fuel pumps are put into cars with a larger output than the motor will ever need, injectors would most likely have to be swapped out to larger cc's though most likely.
