Great Idea or a brain fart?
hey guys...im having someone make me a custom 3 inch exhaust and im wondering...where should i have the exit point at???....the stock location or a side rocket exhaust out the rear left fender well just before the tire??? if anyone has any opinions, i would like to hear them...and the flame suit is on for you special guys...thanx
Yeah, thats why I think so, I just dont think it looks right on this car. I dont like the side exhaust on the ford trucks either. But there is a guy in my apt complex that has side exhaust on his mustang that I think looks alright. It really just depends on the car. More often than not, I think is looks bad. and I think it would on this car
I dont know a ton on the exhaust but if the side exhaust is anything like the rear exit far as carbon deposits I would leave it out the back because you would probably have a mess on the side of the car instead of the back. Like I said I dont know much about the side exhaust set up

I'd probably melt the fascia though...with the heat from the exhaust...i dunno i guess ill have to use the stock location....i just wanted to try somethin new and make it look crazy...
If it was done right, a dual side exit exhaust could be pulled off with this car. I contemplated it but then decided not to because of all the work and custom fabrication it would take. I was thinking of using a single inlet/dual outlet Flowmaster into pipes with resonators that came out before the rear wheels. But trying to either fabricate tips that would look decent or try and cut holes in the sideskirts just proved to make it a daunting task. Not too mention, getting the stock exhaust cut out in the rear bumper filled and re-painting the whole bumper is just way too much to just have an exhaust. You also have to think about size and length of the exhaust for your application. Changing the overall length of the exhaust is going to effect performance just as changing the size.
When it all comes down to it, it's your car and your idea. If you think you can do it, then God bless ya! Make sure you plan it thoroughly; though, because there's always that one thing you didn't think about. I really don't want to spend $1000+ doing something unique when I could have a custom exhaust from the engine to the stock location made for $800 that would perform just as well (on average) as the majority of what is available out there for our cars.

Well first off you have emissions issues. Second, the car next to you is going to hate you.
Third any side exhaust I have heard sounds raspy. Fourth you will probably get wiffs of exhaust a lot more while sitting in your car.
Last it just doesn't fit the Cobalt looks wise.
Just keep the exhaust in the stock location is my opinion. It's all about what you like.

Okay, first of all, that application is engineered for Turbo cars.
Second, our cars make boost way too soon to use something like this.
Third, we need more backpressure than a turbo car does. The lack of back pressure allows turbos to spool up quicker. We don't have that issue hanging off of our exhaust manifold and backpressure is needed for optimum performance.
Just take that into consideration before buying something like that. I don't think that will help our cars. More likely, it will hurt performance and malfunction sooner or later from turning on and off so often...

Also, http://www.atpturbo.com/root/releases/release091004.htm, is a better link so people don't have to scroll through that web site trying to find what you were referring to.
so full 3 inch including cat and muffler for about $340...its not to bad and i know the quality is good. so rear exit sounds good to me...and yea i was thinkin about that dual side exit idea...all i have to do is put a glass pack on then put a Y pipe behind that then out the rear fender wells and i can put a hangar on each of the pinch welds and then on the exhaust....but the carbon deposits is another problem i could run into but i don't there would be a problem because it would be coming out before the tires...but thanks for your opinions, its appreciated
yea im gonna be doing the mods in my sig...but its over the course of like another year and a half...i don't have the money to do it right now...besides im only 17 and i know a lil bit tooooooooo much about cars for my age...anyone hear of the University of Northwestern Ohio??? first actual university for tuner gearheads.... i got accepted already so im going into the High Performance division of that, and you learn everything there is to know about building, and squeezing the most ponies out of any engine there is...its 3 and a half years long...3 day weekends every week...and class is from 1 to 6...and i have the next 18 hours to do whatever i want...
