nice, whats ETA up and running???
06blackg85ss 05-12-2007, 02:08 PM A few weeks hopefully... just waiting on my ARP stuff and head gasket to finally get in. But I"ll be testing on the stock motor for now since my head was finally sent out to be cnc ported, custom cams, oversized valves, Ti retainers, new valve springs.... It's all out being worked, just waiting for it to come back.
Also gonna probably swap out the compressor housing to a t-60 for now just so I can fit it somewhere.
06blackg85ss 05-12-2007, 02:12 PM 9.5:1 for this build, waiting for someone to release a 8,5:1 or 8.0:1 compression. Might hold off on motor assembly til then. Gotta see what comes up. Want to do this once the right way and have a motor that lasts. But I will be building up my stock one also as a spare just in case I have problems

some more pics... waiting on the my intercooler, piping, clamps, and godzilla blowoff valve to arrive next week...
pimpnwink 05-12-2007, 02:19 PM Damn that is going to be a crazy setup. Im just wondering if you could tell me where you are sending your heads out and how much it is for you because I am actually considering JBP stage 3 heads so I am not sure if there is another option for me thanks.
06blackg85ss 05-12-2007, 02:21 PM it's a Turbonetics custom T-76 Ceramic ball bearing, big shaft, Q-trim turbo. A little big, but the price was rediculous, so I'll probably just swap housings around til I come up with a good combo. This turbo cost my Friend over $2500 new. Not gonna say what I paid for it lol. butit only had 3 dyno pulls on it. thing is as close to brand new as you can get

head is being done by the guys that did jason whitfields cobalt... close to the same spec and setup too...
pimpnwink 05-12-2007, 02:25 PM Thanks for the info.
06blackg85ss 05-12-2007, 02:27 PM once I get all the specs back to me I"ll post em up in this thread
O ya I remember you postin that, I can't wait to this beast tearin it up.
Wouldn't a lower compression like 8.5 or 8.0:1 be better, but i've heard sticking to 9.5:1 would be easier for tuning
06blackg85ss 05-12-2007, 02:30 PM I would rather have the lower compression, might end up having a set made and sell the 9.5's, just gotta see how difficult tuning will be
Halfcent 05-12-2007, 02:37 PM On a total side note....
Did you know that if you take those plastic vacu-formed accessory displays OUT of those Dremel XPR accessory cases that there are dividers you can use to hold a lot more stuff in those little accessory cases?
06blackg85ss 05-12-2007, 02:48 PM Good idea man. New kit I just bought so don't have many bits yet (my old one got stolen)
victory_red_SS 05-12-2007, 03:11 PM I would rather have the lower compression, might end up having a set made and sell the 9.5's, just gotta see how difficult tuning will be
You do know that Wiseco made 8.0:1 pistons for me which means it is only a matter of getting them to use the same specs for you, right???;) ;)
06blackg85ss 05-12-2007, 03:14 PM good shit man. did they create a pn for them? and how much they run you? (you can pm that if you want) I might be placing an order monday then.
Anyone interested in a set of 9.5:1 diamond pistons uncoated... lol
Coblt ss super 05-12-2007, 03:16 PM NICE PAUL!! your cars gunna rip now, and dude when you get that all installed let me know so i can come down and check it out
06blackg85ss 05-12-2007, 03:18 PM will do... hopefully have it up and runnin mid summer. Just gotta see how my funds situation is
SSMOKEM 05-12-2007, 03:32 PM Good luck with your new setup! Looks like it's gonna be a blast!:twothumbs
Be sure to get good pics of the install;)

Blown 4-banger 05-12-2007, 06:43 PM :cussing: Fucking traitor!!!
Good luck with the build man, can't wait to see it in action... after waiting 5 minutes for the turbo to spool
Jimmys2007CobaltSS/C 05-12-2007, 06:48 PM nic e man u got a messy room j/k lol
Looks like good times for sure man.
Is that a Uromastyx (sp?) HE looks like a big boy. I have a beardie now that is getting crazy bug
06blackg85ss 05-12-2007, 07:03 PM savannah monitor... lol
and don't worry about spool time. I have a few different compressor and exhaust housings coming in next week so I can tailor it to my motor... plus... who the fuck wants peak torque off the line anyway. I have a hard enough time hooking up with the setup I have now... and I have every traction mod available on my car at the moment........ and slicks
Sunburst_SS 05-12-2007, 07:08 PM looks good man...should haul some ass. The only I would want to change is the wastegae, everyone I know that used the deltagates always had trouble with spiking/leaking...I always used a Tial on my turbo cars and loved em. Can't wait to see it run!
victory_red_SS 05-12-2007, 07:11 PM savannah monitor... lol

I keep telling you to get that 1 traction mod you don't have, then all the torque off the line will be cool.;)
R&C_rallySS 05-12-2007, 07:37 PM This thread kicks ass, I really think Paul knows what hes doing. Would be real nice if they came out with forged diamon pistions in 8:1 or 8:5:1.
06blackg85ss 05-13-2007, 01:36 AM I'm gonna talk to another company about releasing a set hopefully.... I'm gonna end up getting a set of 8.5:1 pistons made for now since my boost plans have changed drastically
What size external wastegate is that?
06blackg85ss 05-13-2007, 01:54 AM 45mm

Who gives a shit about traction off the line! Its a FWD car, fuck traction, its all about roll racing with FWD.
FWD FTMFL!!!!!!
CJ BadBlackSS 05-13-2007, 07:12 AM That thing is a beast...

06blackg85ss 05-13-2007, 12:11 PM Paul, Is the 2.2L block the same block as the 2.0L? If so I can get a used one really cheap and build it part time...
I'm almost postive that it is. Still need to check a few things. I have a spare motor available to me for like $50. I was thinking of building that up since it's cheaper for parts. I do think that the LSJ block is cast differently though and is a little stronger.

Yeah the LSJ block is cast inhouse at the German assy plant for the LSJ, but the only diff is casting technique, all of the dimensions and hardpoints are the same, so pretty much ecotec block can be built up the same way, and then substituted for the LSJ, I think there may be some ineterference issues in certain head/block combos though
Plus it could be built with stronger rods, stronger crank and pistons....for the same money as buying a used LSJ motor and starting from there.
For sure. I'm not 100% off the top of my head on what the 2.2 eco cylinder sleeves are rated for, but I have .pdf copies of all of GM's build books if you want em, they have teh info and part numbers/specs for pretty much everything needed.
The one major difference with the LSJ is the piston cooling jets in the bottom end. I know other ecos have the passages, just not the actual jet arms themselves, but I don't remember what all was required to get them up and running in them
06blackg85ss 05-13-2007, 08:57 PM pretty much.... I know the LSJ is a bit denser casting.. and the oil squirters of course
Blown 4-banger 05-13-2007, 09:20 PM roll racing is for pussies that can't drive. Digs are for real men. Or for people who can't afford to spends ooodles of money getting their FWD piece of shit to hook up.
06blackg85ss 05-13-2007, 09:50 PM hey I'm not loaded either man... it's just choosing the right mods first. and finding deals (which I had plenty of ... thanks peoples for that)
tcolli17 05-13-2007, 10:57 PM Or for people who can't afford to spends ooodles of money getting their FWD piece of shit to hook up.

victory_red_SS 05-13-2007, 11:57 PM lol damn you victory red
Come on Paul, you know you want to.....with your connections you will have it done it no time.:lol:
06blackg85ss 05-14-2007, 01:00 PM tis true... but time is one thing I don't have at the moment. might be going in with a friend to open a shop in the near future... so then maybe it will be done
06blackg85ss 05-14-2007, 07:33 PM ok got all my piping today for the D.P. and the intercooler...all 3" t304 ss. Hopefully get rockin on this thing soon
Im pumped for this, and its not even my car
06blackg85ss 05-14-2007, 08:19 PM lol ... thanks man... just a few minor time setbacks I trying to overcome right now... but this is definitely gonna be done soon.

Rod, you have more patience than I will ever have. I'd fly down to TO and start smakcing ppl until it was done. But thats just me

lol... that's why I'm handling this myself... from planning to building to tuning and testing. I don't like to rely on others. Fortunately I have cobalt-addiction locally and they have helped me out before and hopefully they can help me out with my turbo manifold and intake manifold. Gonna talk to Kenny tomorrow and see what kind of schedule and whatnot I can work out with them. I unfortunately lost my garage last year, so this is definitely gonna be a challenge, but so were all my last projects which people said I could never get finished.. and I did. So wish me luck and hopefully soon I'll have one the fastest, if not the fastest street legal balts out there, until rod's is done of course.
pimpnwink 05-15-2007, 08:28 PM ^^ maybe you can tell them to somehow make a few of those manifolds and sell them hint hint lol.
06blackg85ss 05-15-2007, 08:46 PM hopefully

Do you honestly thing your going to get 700 whp from it too
Seriously those turbos can't support that power. 700 rwhp is like 850 to the crank. Plus having two cylinders trying to spool both turbos you'll have massive lag. I'm thinking about going with a Whipple W140AX, AKA the 2.3L twin screw the cobra guys use to make 600 rwhp. I'm thinkin a mild 700 whp is easy
I may be a broke ass 18 year old kid, but getting 95% of my stuff sponsored helps A LOT!!!
victory_red_SS 05-16-2007, 10:12 AM Do you honestly thing your going to get 700 whp from it too :lol:Yes
Seriously those turbos can't support that power. 700 rwhp is like 850 to the crank. Plus having two cylinders trying to spool both turbos you'll have massive lag. You don't seem to know what I am actually doing with this build aspect of my project.
I may be a broke ass 18 year old kid, but getting 95% of my stuff sponsored helps ALOT!!!
Well, I am not 18 or broke and I won't be stopping this project until I acheive my goals.
I am curious as to your reasoning though, of why you feel the need to put out there that you are doing a $6,000. build.:poke:
06blackg85ss 05-16-2007, 01:08 PM as he said Rod... he's only 18.. no experience... I have full confidence in what you'll be putting down. I'm going for the same numbers, but on one big turbo (and nitrous for down low) damn s/c fanbois.... they'll learn the hard way lol
CJ BadBlackSS 05-16-2007, 02:30 PM as he said Rod... he's only 18.. no experience... I have full confidence in what you'll be putting down. I'm going for the same numbers, but on one big turbo (and nitrous for down low) damn s/c fanbois.... they'll learn the hard way lol
But you still won't have traction :P
WSFrazier 05-16-2007, 03:08 PM Cam Cam has no clue, is all.
Good luck, I finally finished my bottom end and got the car back on the road. I now want to do my top end, as soon as the locals here get their cams in so I can get a 2nd set of stockers and get a regrind.
Once my motor is the way I want it, I will start looking into power adders. I am still waiting to see a tuned and track tested turbo balt before I choose what I want. It will either be you or Dan probably.
Blown 4-banger 05-16-2007, 06:52 PM Well, I am not 18 or broke and I won't be stopping this project until I acheive my goals.
I am curious as to your reasoning though, of why you feel the need to put out there that you are doing a $6,000. build.:poke:
Because, it will consist of around $6000 worth of parts/machining/labor
damn s/c fanbois.... they'll learn the hard way lol
 turbo owns
Blown 4-banger 05-17-2007, 01:43 AM  turbo owns
You wish, you shall all see the insanity of a blower once my car is done ;)
1gmfanatik 05-17-2007, 01:49 AM It's superchargers vs. turbos...Who will win?!?!?! lol...All I care about, is that there will be some sick ass Cobalts out there. Why can't this be more of a friendly competition against each other and a whoopin on them damn imports? lol..Hell, I have a 300Z TT that wants to redeem himself after losin to me while his car wasn't runnin right. lol..I am applyin for a new job, and uh...lets just say...If this job comes through....My car will be getting built from bottom up FO SHO!! lol..
Keep up the good work on them builds guys, I support all ya'll and your super Cobalt building
06blackg85ss 05-17-2007, 12:55 PM lol... it's all in fun man. Maybe others are taking it seriously. but while I"m out on you due to turbo lag and traction from the instant tq of the s/c once it spools up... I just say goodbye. lol
and traction... who needs traction. that's what the slicks are for
Sw4y1313 05-17-2007, 04:35 PM Its nice to see others doin some engine builds now-a-days. My setup will be on the road first week of june. it would have been done by now if i didnt need money for my brothers wedding.
Blown 4-banger 05-17-2007, 06:35 PM lol... it's all in fun man. Maybe others are taking it seriously. but while I"m out on you due to turbo lag and traction from the instant tq of the s/c once it spools up... I just say goodbye. lol

Yeah, those are cheap... and so are new axles and a high performance clutch
Its all in good fun though, weather its turbo'd or super'd they will still be fast as fuck and destroy almost anything they come up against :cssNET:
You wish, you shall all see the insanity of a blower once my car is done ;)
I hope so man, I hope you prove me wrong. But I doubt it. Turbo cobalts are already running 11's 10's and 9's nippin at 8's and you guys complain about turbo lag, the S/C is taking forever........
You car will be sick no doubt there :twothumbs

*Hijacking thread*
Just to please/piss you off, we have decided to use the down time for the rwd conversion to address your concerns. ;)
So we are getting bigger turbos and a custom crankshaft good for 1,000bhp.:bye:
*Returning thread Paul* :)
06blackg85ss 05-18-2007, 05:24 PM goddamn man. if you can pm me some info on the crank. also on the rods since my build just took a turn to the higher boosted side of life
Blown 4-banger 05-18-2007, 07:03 PM There are no LSJ Cobalts running 7's on a SC.:nono: :nono:
Read the post I quoted, he said TURBO cobalts
iLLmaTic3s 05-19-2007, 01:52 AM BCP all the way. oh that turbo is huge. can't wait to tape this shit when its all said and done. paul is clearly the man.
06noscobaltss 05-25-2007, 01:35 PM 06BlackG85SS do you have a stock block for sale? All I need is the bare block with sleeves pressed in already. I do not need pistons/rods/crank or anything just the block. Please PM me and let me know.

06blackg85ss 05-25-2007, 07:01 PM won't be til I pull the stock motor. My spare is the one I"m building up in the mean time. BTW selling the T-76 and swapping for a gt3071ar. Details to come soon
c0baltic 05-25-2007, 07:13 PM Dam Bro.. so where do you sleep? lol
06blackg85ss 05-25-2007, 09:28 PM sleep.... what the hell is sleep? lol
Blown 4-banger 05-30-2007, 09:53 PM Depends on if it before or after the twin screw. I've already started rough mock up of a sheet metal intake for the W140AX :D
Between 06blackg85ss and Blown4banger I wonder who will have the SICKEST engine!!
When all is said and done would be nice to see a little track action:guns: who ever wins can take on Victoryredss!! Damn that would almost be Payperview material..
 this is an awesome post. i can't wait to see all 3 of those cars. Especially when they start destroying cars on the street :D

M-Dub 05-30-2007, 11:50 PM G'damn guys why all the fightin'! Look we are all here with the same common love and passion for the car! Some a little more extreme than others! Look I hope to be able to see all 3 of these cars, in person! Keep it up, and let's keep down the hostilities here!!
Awesome guys keep it up, I am workin' on my own little sumpthin' sumpthin' which I will reveal once I get all my parts!
RollOver360 05-31-2007, 12:34 AM Nice man Pssstttt.... But i think ur lizard wants a new tank.... thats what he told me... he wants one thats 4 feet long... and i think i have one thats that size...
later
06blackg85ss 05-31-2007, 01:21 AM thats what I need man..... gotta see what kind of funds are available.... have my build going on plus some side projects. Hopefully in the next 2-3 weeks the turbo will be up and running on the stock motor... than we see how much it can really take...
1gmfanatik 05-31-2007, 01:26 AM Glad to hear Paul. I'm trying my damndest to get a better job so that I can do a Turbo swap this winter. Matt's all about doing it, I just need to get the loot together. I'm just a lil worried about what might happen once we start pushin her a bit more ya know?? I think she'll do well, but won't know for sure till it's done.
06blackg85ss 05-31-2007, 01:05 PM I hear ya man. Once I get it tuned enough to drive it I'll probably take it out by matt to dial it in on the stock motor. and see what I can get out of it
Blown 4-banger 05-31-2007, 06:24 PM OH BOY!!!! MY BUILD WILL BE DONE SOONER THAN EXPECTED!!!! Yesterday was graduation night! Needless to say I'm walking around with close to $600 in my wallet and several checks at home. An extra $850 will move the build along nicely :D :D :D Hell all thats left to actually buy or get sponsored is the rods. Everything else is sponsored. I'm gettin pissed because Ferrea can't send me shit until I have my cams, and COMP is taking forever :cussing:
06blackg85ss 05-31-2007, 07:33 PM damn youngins...lol. no sponsorships on this build for me
Blown 4-banger 05-31-2007, 07:47 PM Damn rich people... lol. I couldn't do my build without sponsorships
06blackg85ss 05-31-2007, 08:43 PM rich, who? dude I ain't rich, just helps when you can do your own work I guess

06blackg85ss 07-07-2007, 05:35 PM well finally an update.
Finally got my head back from rippmods (they had it since January which is what has held me up) Of course they did absolutely nothing with it, so cams are going out this week to get ground and new valvetrain is being ordered.
New smaller turbo setup will be in next week and hopefully in the car by the end of next week. Going with a T-3 super 60 for starters on the stock motor to figure out the tuning and should net me @375whp or so. Going to be a triple intercooled setup using the factory intake manifold with laminova's, and front mount air to air setup, and of course my favorite thing, methanol injection.
MOney has been going to buying a new place to live next year so I've had to take my time with this project, but all parts are pretty much ready for the new motor, and that should be built within the month once the cams are back.
Stay tuned for more updates next week.
RollOver360 07-08-2007, 01:03 AM sick... I cant wait to see when its finished.... and the vids!
I still think someone wants a tank...

06blackg85ss 07-20-2007, 11:09 AM well cylinder head build got f'd up by ripp, they lost it for 5 months or so, so a friend of mine is gonna do it next month. just finished mangling my spare S/C to make the intake manifold. Not completely done, but good enough to get everything working. all the inside part is gutted and now the intake portion is no longer a V but a huge square. I'll port this s/c probably next week or sunday, but getting some rest for now cause it's gonna be a long night.
victory_red_SS 07-20-2007, 11:55 AM I hope all goes well for you Paul. :thumb:
