Just wondering what the LNF guys think..

I bought a 2008 Cobalt SS/TC in which I did not know that the G85(LSD) was a option, I thought it was standard. But later to find out that I do not have it. Now how would this effect my performance in our SS/TCs when it comes to mods?

Depends what kind of mods you have planned. Won't be a big deal for negligible mods.

I would think traction will suffer even stock without the LSD. I have it and still want more traction at times.

The stock Conti's stink for traction in cooler temps.

yeah if you are drag racing or racing in a straight line it makes no difference. It's in tight corners and such that you will suffer without LSD

it's not really that big of a deal to be honest. I mean it's a FWD car. LSD doesn't make that big of a difference. If you were that stingy about it then you shoulda got AWD

I think its worth it just so you can say your car is loaded up. It might help the resale value/trade in value. My idea has always been this: if your gunna spend 25k on a car might as well throw in a couple hundred more to get the best. Then again im obsessive compulsive like that. your car should be fine though

I am the same way...now I want a G8 GT that I saw for $22k with 7k miles on it. Its been a while since I had a FWD car that was fast and I was just seeing whats the difference in these cars...Thank People....Oh yea since I wasn't thinking when I bought this car I liked it and wanted it...But...I was thinking that its a SS and there should only be a little amount of Items that would of been Optional. I was wrong

Even without the mechanical LSD, the turbo cars have the break-lock differential which will simulate a mechanical LSD by braking the wheel that's spinning faster. It's just not quite as effective, and of course, it can cause excess heat on the brakes, which isn't always good come track days, but otherwise negligible.

Yeah I wouldn't expect it to go around corners very well while under acceleration ....
It will probably toast transaxles a lot quicker and won't be much for resale ..

Do your research on a vehicles VIN and make sure you are getting what you want next time...

When you wear out your tires pick up some sticker ones (nittos, bfgs etc) and the difference will be almost none (or at least alot less) between G85 and yours. Its you car know so I wounldnt worry about it anymore.

after having a quaife in a previous car and driving it in wintry weather, i had to have the diff. it made heating the tires up at the strip much easier as well. also, and this may have been imagined, but torque-steer seemed to be less of an issue. for me, it was the only option i wouldn't buy without.

Lol for all those people sayin it doesnt make that big of a difference go race someone stock just like you that has lsd same car and everything... Assuming equal drivers they will beat you

Exactly what happened in my ss/sc me and buddy are equal drivers and I always out launched him due to my lsd and him not having one....

I'd race any stock lnf with lsd at the track and show you it doesn't make a difference. I managed a 2.06 60ft with the car being stock.

My car is a non-lsd car. It does not matter for burnouts or straight line acceleration. The lsd option is for people who dont want one tire going up in smoke around turns...which mine will do without a problem. I sorta wish I got the option but I really dont care about handling or auto-cross enough to miss it.

LSD does not effect straight line acceleration. period. My car has one, but it doesn't mean ****

the Grand Prix gtps do not, they will still pull sub 2.0 60's... and its not an option for them, that is the only experience I had with a car that doesn't have one... Also go and look at the mod list of people modding them, yeah, a LSD is no where to be found

just to be clear, i never said an LSD would aid acceleration at the dragstrip. i don't really want to argue whether trying to send 400hp to one or two tires is better. all i said was that it makes it easier in the water box. fully engage the e-brake, stand on the accelerator, steer to keep the car pointed straight then let off the brake.

the reason you don't see many GTPs modded with an LSD is due to the only options being a $1500 quaife (that AFAIK is no longer available) or a modified stock LSD that will eventually frag your tranny (which also is no longer sold, AFAIK). the only other option is the torsen unit from GMR developed for the 4T65 used in the ecotec drag cars. last i read, they were about $1500 also.

so the guys dropping $3-5000 in turbo setups and another $3500 in transmissions to hold 400+whp don't want to "break the bank" with a $1500 LSD??? Or maybe its because, its not needed in drag racing and that is really all modded GTPs are used for

look, i'm brand new here and i'm too old to argue on a forum about differentials. k? you ask about the people who don't buy them, then i mention all the people who did when they were readily available and then you say something else. what's the point? it's not like i'll convince you to rethink your opinion and you are arguing counter to a point i never made (acceleration).
