Starter problems

For some dumb ass reason the starter now seems to not want to mesh with the flywheel and all I get is a "click", turn the key "click" . This is a LDK motor, with a brand new AC Delco starter and nothing but a "click". The click is the starter gear hitting the Flywheel tooth. It has a Spec 2 clutch and flywheel. It used to not do this but now it feels like it wants to F*#k with me. I have a strong battery that I'm using, but it doesn't seem to matter. I've check voltage at the starter, and had 12v. How does it work for a while and all of a sudden it stops? If I turn the crank just a little to align the teeth it starts right up. Does this starter need to be shimmed? I can't figure this out any idea's? thanks .

best thing to do is take out the starter and make sure its moving in and out properly could be getting weak , or try a new starter. I would rather try a new starter then pull my transmission back out .
