NLS was designed for both performance and powertrain protection. Powershifting without NLS forces the RPM's to increase to the point where if you miss a shift you, in all probability, will float the valves, which as anybody that has spent any time around high performance vehicles knows, can be disastrous. Not to mention abusive to the drive train. And with a turbo charged engine closing the throttle, even for an instant, drops HP to the point where, in effect, you're starting all over getting the engine into the power band. GM realized that a 2900# car with 260HP and 260 lbs of torque wasn't going to be driven to church every sunday by a little, white haired old lady. So they built in a feature that would help protect against powertrain failure at the same time as allowing the car to be abused by drivers not very familiar with driving a car that was capable of what this car IS capable of. Namely beating the ***** off most other TWO LITER stock street cars both on the drag strip AND road course. And it didn't cost them a dime for this protection. Just a touch on the ECU. So it is a win/win feature for both GM and the wannabe drag racer in training. If you want to improve upon the NLS feature invest in a quality shift light and experiment with different shift points in each gear. It will eliminate having to watch the tach and allow you to make much more precise and accurate shifts. Make enough runs down the track and you may learn to be a winner. JMHO!

I have to say it IS normal and somewhat expected. The gear split between first and second is pretty wide. Tht's the "designed into the car" cause. Considering the perfrmance of the car in first gear... First could be a fair amount "taller". Caveat is... a taller first gear would be harder on the clutch. The "taller first gear" theory not only would work under acceleration, but when heel/toe downshifting on a road course/autocross. JMO

I just took my own advice and ordered up a MSD shift light. The car has 6000 miles on it and the track opens soon. I'm getting ready.

How about everyone just shuts up unless they have something meaningful to add to the thread. That way the TC guys can stay on topic instead of making dumb elitist comments, and the SC guys wont get butthurt that not everyone respects the SC as much as they'd wish.

Remember guys, if it's really that upsetting to you, remember where you're posting...if you still can't handle it:

Some of the TC crowd think they are driving "GOD's" car lol. The TC is a nice sport compact .....not a ZR1. All the jealousy comments are a joke , I literally could have a TC sitting in my driveway by noon tomorrow..... as could countless other SS/SC owners. It's not like their 50K dollar cars. /

What a bunch of retards...

To the LNF guys: If you can't figure out how to drive your own car, shut the **** up, nobody cares.

To the LSJ guys: You don't have an LNF, stay out of the SS/TC forums. They won't listen to what you have to say anway, so shut the **** up, nobody care.

******* stupid Cobalt owners, makes me kinda glad that I don't have mine anymore.

Have you seen the discussions that have gone on for the last year about this one ******* topic? There is so much NLS discussion on here, so much mis-information and bullshit, so many stupid ideas that people come up with and disperse on here like proven fact, so much idiotic arguing back and forth over topics that are essentially worthless, it just goes on and on. I'm not gonna sugarcoat it for people that don't want to hear the truth. I've tried to help, I've helped people for 3 years, people who listen to me do alright, so I try to help more people. I have been automatically discounted by the LNF 'tards so many times due to the fact that I don't have one, it has finally bothered me. Soon I'll leave this place completely, there are far better places to discuss the important issues, and so far there hasn't been a single "help me figure out the magical NLS figure" thread...

I ordered the MSD model 8963 from Jegs. It's programmable for 4 gears. The beauty part is it doesn't have to be hard wired in. It has an inductive pickup that just pinches one coil wire. No cutting or splicing. It's only 3/4" diameter and about 4" long. Will fit perfect on top of the steering column. I think it will be perfect. I hope!! If it isn't you want to buy it??

I don't think I have any of my 1-2 NLS's on video. They go "POW!" really loud. I like them.

No... you just have to be quick.

Give it a shot sometime. Start out WOT shifting 3-4... that's the easiest to do. Once you get good at doing 2-3 quickly when not WOT... try doing it WOT.

Its also been called Powershifting.
Power shifting and nls feature are different, and why even use the clutch...lol I used to powershift as well in my sc just to hear my axles vibrate. Not the same in the lnf, much smoother..

Its not just limited to the nls feature...

I think you need to talk to Tony Sopranos Dr. Melfi. She could help you with your anger problem.

Really. It's nice to know there's at least ONE person here that knows EVERY THING. Can I buy your Encyclopedia Brittanica? You obviously don't need it any more you ignorant ****.

you dont need no clutch tap to shift. just slam it back, lol. ive been able to do it for quite some time no clutch, however teaching it to newbs is fail, good thing they use their own cars.

Yes, you can shift without a clutch. I wouldn't recommend it, you have a clutch, use it. A clutchless shift is more abusive than anything else you can do to your transmission's synchros and gears.

Generally, it's not a WOT skill, but it is used in racing situations that require left-foot brake modulation, one of the first things they teach you in rally driving is to learn to brake with your left foot and shift without a clutch.

I can do it REAL easy with my Jetta. The SS... no, doesn't really work all that well.

Its not a Dogbox trans... haha.

Doesn't really work in the SS's... Like Joe said... just use the clutch. Ain't no thing to tap the clutch for a half second.

Yup... or if you're good... heel-toe shifting.
