Automatic Transmission swap?

So I was discussing cars with one of my friends earlier today and we began talking about automatic and sequential gearboxes and how sometimes they are a whole lot better to drive with then a manual transmission....particularly in heavy traffic and through towns.

A thought then occured to me....

Would it be possible to swap in the 4 speed auto from the HHR SS into a Cobalt SS/TC?.....seems like it would be a direct fit.

Any thoughts on this? With a beefed up torque converter, it could be a pretty impressive setup.

Anything is possible. If you have the $ I'm betting it can be done.

I'm assuming the 5-speed auto from the Kappas is for RWD only?

I think it would an interesting concept for drag racing oriented cars. Especially if it is an easy swap.

When I dropped a C4 trans in my Mustang, it was running 10's all day...it did hundreds and hundreds of runs before it needed a refresh. Anything but a heavilly modded manual trans would have been blown to pieces from the torque in a fraction of the time....and the clutch would have been hell for the street.

Before going too far I'd ask myself a few questions:

1.) Is the A4 used on the HHR SS's reliable?
2.) At what point does it break, and what breaks?
3.) Is there someone out there who makes upgraded hard parts/clutches/valvebody/whatever it all uses?

I guess if you were a serious drag racer it could make some sense, but for most people it would kill the fun factor of the car. Also the car wasnt designed with drag racing in mind 100% of the time, ... so for ME I'd keep the manual.

I'd never laugh at an idea like this though. Just think of all the Supra, DSM and other platforms who convert to auto when they get serious in drag racing. Just like your Mustang and Fbodies too

Really fast SRT4s do this mod alot usually when looking for 9s. But They have a completely aftermarket tranny availible to them. I think at the point where your going to consider an automatic for specifically drag racing then an OEM FWD tranny wont be strong enough.

yea considering the torque converter for drag applications is usually $1000+

Don't know that Rudy (fmsr) could be trusted to deliver the trans. In case you didn't know he has ripped some people off lately.

Ok, Well even if not FMSR, I'd still really really like to put a built up 4T45E or 4T65E / HD in.
Seems like this shouldn't be completely impossible considering the HHR runs an auto, and Ryan from ZZP has an auto trans 2.1 liter with a 4t65e HD.
