borg warner difference from mitsu turbo on regal

ok so heres the deal... i bought a lnf turbocharger to put on my l61 installed it and it wasnt making boost so i got the turbo off and the guy i bought it off of had a bw and a mitsu turbo he gave me both but the mitsu only had 3k on it so it was a no brainer as to which one to use.... the only thing is the mitsu looks smaller i was wondering if there were any differences in the turbochargers as i still have the bw turbo and if it its indeed bigger id rather use it... but seeing as how the bw and mitsu both make 260hp i wasnt sure if it was all that different...

this sounds like a repost. Im pretty sure you or someone else already asked this same thing maybe back in November.

If the Mitsu is a TD04-19T. Its the same size and makes the same power as the Borg Warner K04 in our cars.

I don't remember there ever being a definitive answer on this. I thought the Mitsu made less power. I have one as a backup, in my garage. It doesn't really look any different to me, other than the BPV being sturdier.

Has someone actually documented a case of a Regal being equipped with the Mitsu turbo from the factory? The Regal we test drove and checked out had a Borg Warner turbo on it.

This thread actually made me a bit curious about the differences in the 2 turbos again so I said screw it and mapped out both compressor maps to show similar boost levels and to be honest, assuming I did the math right in my current exhausted state, the Mitsu td04h-19t (assuming this is the correct Mitsu turbo in question) actually slightly out performs the K04 at 26psi in spool speed and rpm range.... but just barely.

The only really noticable difference here seems to be in spool speeds. The Mitsu spools to about 26.1psi by a rediculous 1900rpm and holds it all the way to about 5800rpm while staying within a 65% efficiency range according to the map below.

The K04 on the other hand spooled to about 26.8psi by 3500rpm and holds boost to about 5600rpm while staying within a 65% efficiency range.... hense the infamous "turbo falling on it's face after 5500rpm" quote we are all familiar with. The turbo isn't really so much not spinning as fast (falling on it's face) as it was at say 5000rpm as compared to 6000rpm, it's just no longer flowing enough air to support the engine's flow demands beyond that rpm at the desired boost pressure, so the boost pressure as a result dips off.

Granted I did get a little lazy and didn't use identical boost figures here, so in fairness the Mitsu turbo @ 26.8psi holds boost to about 5650rpm (basically identical to the K04), however that boost level pushed the turbo slightly over the surge line. Even so, this turbo looks to spool up rediculous quick.

If I am off in my math somewhere please feel free to correct me, but it should all be accurate. Anyways, on with the compressor maps.

First the K04:

And then the td04h-19t

wow pretty good! Im only guessing its the TD04-19T because that one is the only one close enough to what our K04 is. Its in the Kia Optima Turbo which my brother in law has so I got to see it in person. Honestly the compressor housing does look a tad bit smaller but I've seen its performance and its a decent turbo.

As for the regal comment. I agree, I believe its a Borg warner in the Regal. Saw the car at the Baltimore Car&Driver autoshow. Both Regals to be honest (GS and Ti) have the save engine, turbo, and accessory components. NO DIFFERENCE. Its the updated LNF motor. The outlet on the turbo looks smaller though and so does the charge piping.

Find out the exact turbo model and I will map it out compared to the K04 if you'd like.... assuming I can find a compressor map for it of course
