Wow, lots of stupid people in this thread, glad I missed it when it first came up.

How do you people think the NLS feature works? It cuts spark to control rpms. When the spark comes back on as you enter the next gear and get off the clutch, it lights the fuel that is laying in the exhaust. That "pop" everyone talks about is the fuel burning explosively in the exhaust, it is normal and perfetly safe. You start to mod exhaust, straight though mufflers and ****, you will see the fire out the back. My LSJ did it with no real work, once it had full exhaust and other fun ****, the flames were downright impressive without a full-throttle shift.

There just simply won't be enough unburnt fuel left after a tune to ignite, especially after a cat.

I mean, that's my opinion, I could be wrong but I've never heard of stock cars shooting flames unless it was running rich as hell.
When these cars get tuned, they usually are richer than stock.

Stock is the leanest they will run.

Had one on my Tercel, funniest **** ever. Constant, foot-long flames out the exhaust at the push of a button on a 100% stock '93 Tercel. I even clamped my stock SS/SC exhaust tip on there when I got my cat-back for the Cobalt, made it look that much funnier.
