Hey guys, so I noticed yesterday that I have a pretty loud ticking coming from the engine bay. I don't remember the HPFP or injectors sounding like this in the past and I think it make be a broken lash adjuster or rocker, but I'm not really sure. I'll link a vid that you can hear it pretty clearly on. Thanks, any advice would be much appreciated.

 

Usually the HPFP goes more rhythmic once the car warms up a bit. Does it do that?

 

Sounds like injectors to me. Wouldnt hurt to pop the cover off if youre worried though. Might need to change the timing chain tensioner.

 

That video is with the car warm after about a 20 minute drive. When I started the car up this morning it wasn't as loud and I didn't really hear anything off, but I made that vid after I got to work. How would I check to see if its injectors? I'd prefer not to have to open the cover if I don't have to. How exactly would I know if I need to change the tensioner? Thanks for the quick reply guys

 

Get an automotive stethoscope and start poking stuff to see where the noise is coming from.

 

Ok, I can pick one up this weekend. Do you think this is something I should be super concerned about and not drive the car at all or will it be ok till I can find some time to diagnose? Also as far as injectors, I don't really see any problems with afr at all. It sits very close to 14.5 at idle and gets down to around 12.5 at wot.

 

If its still driving okay and not misfiring then it probably is just the injectors. Youll be fine to drive it.

 

That doesn't sound good to me, sounds like a Subaru that has rod knock, but the frequency seems high for idle Edit: listened to it on better speakers and it didn't sound like that anymore, I second checking timing.

Injectors usually aren't that loud, but it's hard to tell what a phone mic would be picking up

 

I agree, I don’t really think it sounds like rod knock, and it really sounds like it’s coming from the top end, and more towards the drivers side. I’ll be picking up some stuff today and trying to figure it out. I also don’t think it’s the injectors because I can still hear them too and they sound like they always have. Plus I haven’t had any misfire codes, have no issues with afr and I don’t hear/feel any misses
